Features to know about

Why Do I Need A Built-In Tongue Weight Scale?

Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Tongue Weight Scale

Without a built-in scale, you've got two choices: haul the trailer to a weigh station or mess with a separate gauge. This hitch saves that trip. The built-in scale shows how much tongue weight's pressing down on your truck. Too much squats the rear end and lifts your steering. Too little and the trailers dancing all over the road. Now you can balance your load before you ever leave the spot where you hooked up.

Do I Need Separate Hitches To Tow Different Trailers?

Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Pintle Hook Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Ball Mount

Fleet and commercial work often means towing more than one kind of trailer. You might pull a flatbed with a lunette ring in the morning and switch to a heavy enclosed or equipment trailer that afternoon. Normally that means changing hitches or hauling extra gear, but not with this setup. The pintle hook and ball mount use the same assembly, so you can switch between them without unbolting or swapping anything on your truck. It's not just convenient, it's a real time saver.

Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Two Balls

The hitch includes 2" and 2-5/16" balls for standard couplers. The smaller size fits most utility trailers and landscape trailers, while the larger one handles heavier enclosed trailers and equipment trailers. You can swap them by pulling the pin and dropping in the other ball, which helps cut downtime when you need to make a quick switch.

If you have a heavy duty truck and you are always bouncing between different trailers, this Weigh Safe WS52ER pintle hitch really makes life easier. I like that the built in scale tells me right away if my load is balanced because I have seen too many guys at the jobsite guessing and then fighting sway down the highway. With this you hook up and know, no second guessing and no extra trip to the scales. I was impressed by how quick it is to go from the pintle hook for a skid steer trailer with a lunette ring to the two and five sixteenths ball for a big enclosed work trailer or even dropping to the two inch ball for something smaller like a camper. It is rated up to twenty two thousand pounds, and it feels like it, all steel, heavy in your hands, and built to take a beating. I do not love that it only works in the drop position, but most of the folks I see using this such as contractors, farmers, or RV owners hauling toy haulers are pulling tall, heavy trailers behind big trucks anyway. For that crowd, I think it is a really smart investment because it is safe, adaptable, and saves a lot of hassle when you are switching between jobs or heading out with different trailers on the weekend.

  • Which Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Scale Fits 2018 GMC Sierra 2500
Hey Tony, a 2018 Ram 2500 would not have had a 3 inch hitch installed on it so the Weigh Safe # WS64WR that you referenced would not work. Instead your truck would have had a 2-1/2 inch hitch installed on it and you'd need the part # WS52ER instead which was designed for this hitch size. Do you still have the factory hitch on your truck?

  • Does Tongue Weight Scale On Weigh Safe Hitch Work With Pintle Or Just Hitch Balls?
Yes, Kyle - the built-in scale on the Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch for 3" receivers # WS64WR works in both the pintle and ball configurations. It reads tongue weight as soon as the trailer is set on the hitch, accurate up to within 1.5% of actual tongue weight. That makes it easy to stay in the safe 10–15 % tongue weight range. Do you usually haul close to max capacity, or do your loads vary a lot?

  • Can Pintle Latch Be Locked Down When Using Hitch Ball To Tow With Weigh Safe WS64WR or WS89WR?
Matt, the latch is only used in the pintle configuration with a lunette ring. When you’re on a ball coupler, the latch stays open and the coupler itself locks onto the ball. Do you pull more pintle trailers or ball coupler trailers in your setup? We have this 3" receiver size in up to 6" drop # WS64WR or up to 8" drop # WS89WR.

  • Does Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch Adjustable For 3" Receivers Come With Locks To Prevent Theft?
Joel, the dual pin key lock assembly comes standard on the Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch # WS64WR to secure the slider. But to lock the shank into your 3 inch receiver, you’ll want a separate 3 inch hitch pin lock like # FA86-00-3160. Do you already use locking pins on your other heavy-duty hitches, or would this be your first? You may have one that works with this, since it's not usually specific to the ball mount or accessory, but more so specific to the receiver size.

  • Where Do Safety Chains Go When Using Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch ?
Rick, you’ll attach your safety chains to the receiver hitch loops on the truck, not the pintle hitch itself. That’s the same whether you’re towing on the ball or the pintle. You'll like the built-in scale and the ability to easily swap between the pintle hitch or the included hitch balls. Do you know if you need up to 6" of drop # WS64WR or up to 8" of drop # WS89WR? I attached a picture to show you how to measure.

  • Can I Use Adapter Sleeve In 3" Receiver Or 2-1/2" Receiver For Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch W/Scale?
Don, you won’t be able to use the 3" Weigh Safe hitches (# WS64WR or # WS89WR) in a 2-1/2" receiver - the shank is too large. If you actually have a 3" receiver, you could use a reducer sleeve like the etrailer # e33YR to step down to 2-1/2" and run the # WS97WR. But honestly, if you’ve got a 3" receiver, you’re better off sticking with the 3" version - the # WS64WR (6" drop) or # WS89WR (8" drop) - for a direct fit and maximum strength. Do you know for sure if your Silverado came with...

  • How To Choose Which Slot To Use On Weigh Safe Adjustable Pintle And Ball Hitch
Brandon, measure from the ground to the top of your truck’s receiver, then measure your trailer’s coupler or lunette ring height when level. The Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch for 3" receivers # WS64WR adjusts in 1 inch increments up to 6 inch of drop, so you’ll line those up for a level tow when comparing your two measurements. Want me to walk you through anything else? I did attach a picture that should help explain this, since I myself am more of a visual learner, and you may be as well.

  • Does Weigh Safe 8" Drop Pintle Hitch Stick Out Farther Than 6" Version?
No, Henry, both the Weigh Safe Pintle Hitches # WS89WR (up to 8" drop) and # WS64WR (up to 6" drop) use the same heavy-duty shank length. The difference is only vertical adjustment 8 inch vs. 6 inch drop. So you won’t gain extra leverage or lose clearance behind the truck. These both fit 3" trailer hitch receivers, so make sure that's the size you have. One thing to note is that you can easily remove the ball mount from the shank so it doesn't stick out far when not towing. Do you need...

  • Is There A Difference Between Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch WS64WR And WS89WR?
Angela, the only difference is the drop range. The Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with tongue weight scale # WS64WR gives you 6 inches of drop, while the # WS89WR goes to 8 inches of drop. Both use a 3 inch shank, both are rated 22K GTW / 2,200 lbs tongue weight, and both come with the pintle plus 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch balls, along with the built-in scale. Do you know your trailer’s coupler height when level? That’ll tell you which drop you need.

  • Adjustable Drop Hitch For Ram 3500 That Sits 7" Higher Than Dump Trailer Coupler
Sharon, the Weigh Safe Adjustable Pintle Hitch # WS89WR with 8 inches of drop is the safer bet for a taller Ram. Both the # WS64WR and # WS89WR are rated for the same 22K GTW, but the extra drop keeps that big dump trailer level - which makes a big difference in braking and stability. I'd measure again to make sure, but there's not much difference in price, so with a big lifted Ram, I'd just opt for the one that offers more drop. You'll really like the benefit of easily swapping 2" ball...

  • How Much Tongue Weight Can Weigh Safe Adjustable Pintle And Ball Drop Hitch Handle?
Hey there Sam. The Weigh Safe 8" adjustable drop hitch # WS64WR is rated for a 2,200-lb max tongue weight on the 3 inch shank. That’s a lot of capacity for big equipment trailers, lowboys, and loaded dump trailers. It comes with an easy-swap 2" ball, 2-5/16" ball, and pintle hitch attachment. What kind of trailers are you pulling most often at that weight?

  • Adjustable Pintle Hitch And Ball Mount For 2022 F450 With Factory 3" Receiver To Tow Lowboy Trailer
Yes, Randy, the Weigh Safe # WS64WR is built exactly for that setup. It’s designed for a 3 inch receiver, rated at 22,000 lbs GTW and 2,200 lbs tongue weight, and works with both lunette rings and the included hitch balls. With your F-450’s towing power, this hitch gives you the heavy-duty match you need. Do you also tow anything lighter, like a camper or flatbed, where you’d switch to the 2 inch or 2-5/16 inch ball?
