  • Can a 48 Inch Long Combo Bar be Used to Make a Hitch Extender
Combo bar # 80948 is used in hitch fabrication and is not technically an extender. It has no hitch pin hole to secure to the receiver on the trailer hitch. The longest regular extender that we have for a 2 inch trailer hitch is # ST18 at 18 inches long. If you used it with a long ball mount, # EA40, then you would have a total of 32-5/8 inches of extension. Please note this will severely reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch. The use of the extension alone reduces the...

  • Solutions to Allow Tailgate to Fold Down on Truck Without Hitting Trailer Jack
One of the easiest way to gain clearance to allow for a tailgate to fold down without hitting the trailer jack is to go with a longer ball mount as that adds distance between the rear of the truck and where the jack will be. For example, the Ball Mount part # EA40 has a distance of 14-5/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the ball hole. Otherwise, when the Ultimate jack part # 322-RDJ-2K is in the lowest position it only sits 1-3/4 inches above the mounting bracket.

  • How Far do Arms of Curt and Swagman Towing Bike Racks Extend?
The Curt bike rack you referenced is for use with a 2" ball mount and not for a hitch extender; additionally, the hitch extender would reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50 percent. Do you not have the required 1-1/2" of space on your ball mount's shank to use the Curt bike rack? If you let me know the issue and what you are trying to do I may be able to help you find a solution.

  • Long Ball Mount and Hitch Extension for 2000 Ford Excursion with Dual Rear-Mount Spare Tires
The extra-long 2-inch ball mount we offer, part # EA40 from Brophy, is 15-3/4-inches long and may give you the clearance you need at your dual rear-mounted spare tires to let you use a friction sway control unit like # 83660 on a bracket # RP26003. If you measure from the center of your hitch pin hole rearward 15-3/4-inches that point will be where the center of the hitch ball hole will be. Do note however that this ball mount is rated for 6000-lbs gross trailer weight and 600-lbs tongue...

  • Parts Needed To Tow Trailer With Tailgate Down on 2019 Ram 2500
The Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender part # HR26 may work to allow you to travel with the tailgate down however it is enough extension to travel with the tailgate down and tow a trailer without interference. This adapter option also cuts the tongue weight of your hitch by one third. I recommend using an extra long Brophy Ball Mount # EA40 which measures 14-5/8". I recommend measuring from the center of the hitch pin hole on your truck out 14-35/8" to make sure it clears the lowered tailgate...

  • Can an Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack be Mounted Sideways for Hatch/Tailgate Clearance
A-frame jacks have a specific mounting pattern using 3 bolts in sort of a triangle configuration. But they are not spaced equally apart meaning if you turn a jack 90 degrees the holes would not line up in most cases. If they line up on yours then you can mount the jack that way. Otherwise you will likely have to drill. There is an easier solution though and that is to use a longer ball mount so that the trailer sits a little further away and eliminates the chance of interference with the...

  • Curt Premium Bike Rack Overall Length For Use In A Dual Receiver While Towing Travel Trailer
I can help you determine the clearance you will have while using the Curt Premium 4 Bike Rack part # C18064 in your dual receiver like part # D-192. Please keep in mind the use of a dual receiver does cut your tongue weight capacity in half. The Curt Premium bike rack part # C18064 measures 40 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to extended arms for the rack. You should be able to determine your clearance with this measurement. There isn't really a specific number that I can tell...

  • Using a Hitch Extender to Keep Tailpipe Out of the Water when Launching a Boat
If your tow vehicle has a 2-1/2 inch hitch opening then Curt extension # C45048 is a great option to give you more length between the vehicle and trailer so you won't have to dunk your tail pipe in the water. If your vehicle does not have a 2-1/2 inch hitch receiver then this extension will not work. If you have a 2 inch hitch I recommend going with a longer ball mount instead of a hitch extender. On a 1-1/4 or 2 inch hitch a hitch extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the...

The hitch is adjustable to fit vehicle frames from 24 to 46 inches wide, has a capacity of 5,000 lbs and features the 2 inch receiver you wanted. • Recommended Clearance Between Truck Camper and Towed Enclosed Box Trailer
If your truck camper's rear Rieco jacks have contacted the front of your box trailer you'll need either a longer SuperTruss extension like the 48-inch # TLE1548 or an extra long ball mount # EA40 to increase your turning clearance. This 2-inch ball mount gives you over 15-inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the 1-inch diameter ball hole. If you compare this to your current ball mount, you'll know how many inches of additional clearance you can add without having to swap out...

  • Can I Use Two Hitch Extenders Together For A Lightweight Kayak Trailer & Bike Rack?
Hi, let me help you with your setup and get you back on the road! Though it is not recommended to use two hitch extenders no matter what the capacity is. (They reduce max tongue weight only by 50%.) We do have the Brophy Ball Mount # EA40, it has 14-5/8 inches of clearance. That may give you enough distance and if we paired it with your dual hitch receiver and your current bike rack it might help you get back on the water. If that doesn't work you could get a bike rack with some rise...

  • Can Electric Over Hydraulic Actuators be Submerged Under Water on a Boat Trailer
Electric over hydraulic actuators are not meant to be submerged but your best option for protection against water is the HydraStar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HS381-8067. It looks like there is space forward of the winch post on your boat trailer so that is a good place to mount it. One thing that will help to keep less of the trailer submerged is a longer ball mount such as # EA40 which is 14-5/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole.

  • Using a Hitch Extender to Reach Past Lowered Tailgate to Tow Trailer and Carry Golf Cart
Some hitch extenders provide more clearance but are for flat towing a vehicle behind an RV. There are other extensions, such as # HE06 which can be used for towing. With these or any extender it will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. For example if the tongue weight capacity of your hitch is 500 pounds, using the extender will reduce it to 250 pounds. So the tongue weight of the trailer cannot exceed 250 pounds. Adapter # HE06 has a 350 pound tongue...

  • Will Using a Long Ball Mount Reduce the Tongue Weight Capacity of a Trailer Hitch
First, the CURT Multi-Ball Adjustable Ball Mount, # D900, measures 15-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball. If you are needing 18 inches, this ball mount will come up just a little short. A fixed ball mount, like # EA40, is just a little longer at 14-5/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. The length will not negatively affect the tongue weight capacity of the hitch enough to warrant any concern provided you...

  • Short A-Frame Trailer Jack to Avoid Interference with Lowered Tailgate on Toyota Tacoma
The shortest A-frame jack we have available is the Bulldog Round # BD155032, which measures just a tad over 10 inches from the mounting bracket to the top of the jack. We do not have an A-frame jack that measures 8 or fewer inches from the bracket to the top of the unit. Another possible solution to avoid interference between your Tacoma's tailgate and jack is to simply use a longer ball mount to move the trailer further back from the truck when hooked up. • Are Ball Mounts Supposed to Sit Flush With the Hitch They Are Used On
Having a longer ball mount wouldn't be a problem at all. The biggest issue you may run into is banging your shins on it as it would stick out further than a shorter one. Ball mounts don't have to sit flush with the hitch they are installed into so you would be just fine. We even sell super long ball mounts like the part # EA40 which has a distance of 14-5/8 inches from the pin hole to the ball hole. I attached a help article on trailer towing that you may find informative.

  • Is There a Way to Increase Distance Between Hitch and Trailer for Tailgate Clearance
Since hitch extenders cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent a better solution would be a longer ball mount like the # EA40 which is 14-5/8 inches from pin hole to ball hole and would most likely give you the extra clearance you'd need to be able to lower your tailgate when towing and not hit the trailer jack.

  • Do Longer Hitch Extenders Reduce Hitch Capacity
There isn't a 100% direct mathematical relationship I'm aware of but yes, the further rearward you go from the hitch receiver, the lower the tongue weight capacity gets. Which is why extenders typically will reduce a trailer hitch's capacity by at least half or more. The same doesn't hold true for a longer ball mount, because it's a single piece and not an add-on like an extender. I'm assuming you have a 2 inch class III receiver on your 2012 Outback. I'm not sure what kind of rise/drop...
