Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Brophy hitch reducer and extender, two and a half inch to two inch trailer hitch, part number HR26. With this product not only do you get a reducer, but you also get an extender. It's perfect for situations such as this where we can't drop our tailgate down all the way because our jack is getting in the way. Now with it installed as you can see, zero problems. This can also work out great if you need a little more clearance for your bike racks or cargo carriers. It's made out of a sturdy steel construction with a black powder coat finish, so it's going to resist rust and corrosion.

It's going to allow you to adapt your two and a half inch by two and a half inch receiver to your two inch by two inch accessories, while giving you an extension of six inches pin hole to pin hole. It's going to have a maximum gross trailer weight of 5,000 pounds and have a maximum gross trailer weight when used with a weight distribution of 10,000 pounds. It's going to have a maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds, and a maximum tongue weight when used with a weight distribution of 1,000 pounds. Brophy does know that when using this product it's going to reduce your hitch capacity by one-third, so keep that in mind when towing. To get this installed you're going to need two hitch bending clips. What we'll do is we'll line up our first holes. Make sure that the end with the collar is obviously going to be sticking out this way.

Take our first pin and clip, slide that through. Then we can take our accessory for our bowl mount as you see here, slide it in, line up our second set of hitch pin holes. Then take our second hitch pin clip and put that in place. If you need pins and clips, they're available on our website at part number PC3. That's going to complete our look at the Brophy hitch reducer and extender, two and a half inch to two inch trailer hitch, part number HR26..

I appreciate the fast shipping. I’m using this part to reduce the 2.5” hitch on my Ram Power Wagon to 2”, and to create more space for my tailgate to be lowered. I’m pulling a 4,000 lb. camper using a anti-sway weight distribution hitch. 704245

HR26 fits and works perfect. If you use one of these don’t forget you may have to extend your trailer’s wiring harness a bit to allow it to reach the truck. 609971

Well, this does what it is supposed to do but there is way too much play in the way it fits the receiver in my 2018 Ram 2500. Now I need to mess around with wrapping it in tape or pay a high price for a rattle clamp which is a nuisance to install every time I want to take this off the truck. I actually think this is way overpriced for what it is. But etrailer's service and shipping was excellent. 672417

Extension works really well I pull my 34 foot bumper pull camper with it. My rzr fits in my truck with the tail gate down. Use good quality hitch pins I bent one and found out I had not a good quality one. Very happy with this extension. 611044

etrailer's Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" was perfect for my situation. I already had a reducer but after adding steps to my Lance 650 I needed a little better access to my hitch. This extends the hitch perfectly and replaces my previous reducer. 633590

Well built and strong. I think I ordered the 8 inch but I wish there was other size options. With 8 inch hitch on my 6000 pound trailer I felt lots of clunking back there while towing on Mtn roads. I may cut the adapter shorter and re-drill the hole. I only needed 4-5 inches so my tailgate would open with my old camper. I also bought hitch clamps from hits clam.com which helped. 657792

This is perfect for my use! I have a 1 ton truck with a 2.5 in hitch and I needed something to allow me to to attached a Thule TX2 pro bike rack more solidly than the factory hitch 2.5 to 2 in sleeve. This extended helped by allowing a secure attachment point to the receiver and a second point for the rack. It's now very secure and I can haul the family bikes without worry of the sleeve coming out. 653467

The Extension and Anti Wobble Lock combine to make a "Rock Solid" connection without any motion. The HR26 looks and feels like it was part of the original Tow system. Excellent Solution! E-Trailer 293613

My truck has a 2-1/2" receiver. I already owned a heavy duty 2" hitch. This 2" reducer & extender was perfect for my use. I used it to tow a rental trailer and needed to extend my receiver to allow me to tow with the tailgate down. This reducer/extender did the trick. I had plenty of room making tight u-turns. The quality of the product is very good. I would recommend this product to others. 484689

Looks like it's going to be a good product for me. The right length extension plus it eliminates the need for the factory sleeve to reduce from 2 1/2 to 2 inches. 435310

This Class V hitch adapter works great. It allows me to use all my standard Class IV, hitches and also extends the hitch to the rear of the motorhome for extra clearance. The 7 wire molded trailer wire and connector was easy to install and provided the needed length to allow for tight turns. 434903

We can now haul our golf cart with the tailgate (on our Chevy HD 2500 6'-6" bed) down and still pull our Apex 24' travel trailer. Before we would need to remove the tailgate. Our truck hitch is a class 5 rated at 13,500 lbs. and our trailer fully loaded is 5964 lbs. We only needed to extend our 7- pin cord ,the breakaway brake cable and safety chains. 229543

This heavy duty extension is going to work perfect for towing my boat behind my truck and camper. This is just what I needed. The quality is superb. I found a similar product on Amazon but the reviews were poor and the quality looked inferior to the e-trailer product. 257391

Built very well and did exactly as I expected. I had a 2015 GMC 2500HD pulling a Cougar travel trailer. I purchased the extension so I could haul a golf cart in my truck while towing the travel trailer. It gave me the additional room I needed and the ride was comparable. Turns out I had to remove the propane tanks on the trailer as well to get the full clearance but it would not have been possible without this extension. Used it for a full season with no issues at all before I bought a 5th wheel toy hauler. Very handy item. 508944

  • Using Anti-Rattle Devices with a 2-1/2 to 2 Inch Hitch Reducer and Extender
Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 6" Long Item # HR26 is at a fixed length no matter if you are strictly reducing or are also extending. It only has the 2 sets of pin holes; one set to pin the adapter into the hitch and one set for the accessory in the end of the adapter. The issue with using adapters is that they create an additional point of potential movement which amplifies the sloppiness. You can reduce that but you would need to use 2 anti-rattle...

  • Hitch Adapter Or Extension Compatible With Weight Distribution System
The use of an extension like the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 6" Long # HR26 will not work with a weight distribution system. The use of an adapter like this reduces the tongue weight by 1/3 to 1/2 depending on the actual extender and is not intended for use with weight distribution. If you just need the reducer for your system, I recommend the Curt Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" # C45405 which will make things compatible as long as you...

  • Can Brophy 2-1/2 to 2 Inch Hitch Reducer and Extender be Used with Weight Distribution
Brophy hitch extender and reducer # HR26 is indeed rated for use with weight distribution. When used with weight distribution this reducer is rated for 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 1,000 pounds tongue weight. However, the use of this extender reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 1/3. So for example if your trailer hitch tongue weight capacity is 1,000 pounds it would be reduced to 667 pounds when using the extension. The other option is to use a 2-1/2 inch...

  • How to Use the Thule T2 Bike Rack with a 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch
You are on the right track. The only way we have that will allow you to use the Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack part # TH9044 with the 2.5" receiver tube opening on your truck would be with adapter. For this, I recommend the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender part # HR26. This adapter offers both a reducer from 2.5" to 2" and an extension of 7" from the center of each hitch pin hole. This 7" extension will have more than enough room for the shank of the T2 to securely rest inside....

The Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 is a fine choice to fit to your Thule T2 Pro XTB # TH9034XT. The Thule should have come with a locking hitch pin for the 2" end of the reducer so a great choice for securely locking 2 1/2 inch hitch pin would be the BOLT Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock Item # BL7023585. • Hitch Extender to Prevent Trailer Jackknifing When Backing
If you're backing into tight spots where the trailer is almost jackknifed, the best thing to do would be to remove the spring bars from your weight distribution system before backing. The Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 fits all standard 2-1/2-inch hitch receivers and provides a smaller 2-inch receiver opening. Some Ford OEM hitches in the 2010 - 2013 model year range did have hitch tubes with slightly radiused inside corners that could bind with some standard aftermarket accessories. Yes, the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender part # HR26 can be used with a weight distribution system but you will be limited to 10,000 lbs or 1/3 of your trailer hitch's weight capacity, whichever is lower. This adapter will provide you with a 7" extension from the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch. There should be a sticker on your trailer hitch which lists the weight capacity.

The Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender, # HR26, front hole measures 2-1/2 inches to the front edge of the adapter. I also recommend a pin lock for both the reducer and bike rack that you want to use. The Trailer Hitch receiver Lock, # e98881, will fit both 2-1/2 and 2 inch receiver openings and will provide extra security to your hitch accessory. On the Brophy Hitch Adapter # HR26 the distance between the two hitch pin holes is 7-inches, from hole center to hole center. Overall length end to end is 12-inches. Please note that using this extension will reduce your hitch's weight capacity by one third. This reduction in capacity is a result of the actual hitch load being moved further away from the receiver tube, which causes it to exert more leverage on the hitch.
