Worked great on my 2008 667ES. I drilled out one side's mounting brackets before I realized it was not necessary, though it was a lot easier installing the new strut and then pop riveting the assembly using temporary bolts to hold it in place. The other side was more challenging removing and installing the new strut on the roof of my motorhome due to the wobbly plastic shell.

Four stars for now until I get it installed and test it out but it’s an exact replacement for my gen 1 Thule force XL (Subaru model). If you bust an arm on one of those, TH14933 is what you want. Picture is of failed factory unit and replacement

by:

After years of struggling with a one-elbowed Rocket Box, I snapped the two pieces of the old broken elbow off the ball joints. I pressed the replacement on using a bar clamp (and a block of wood). Now the box opens and closes much easier.

Went right on my VERY old Thule Alpine box (mid-90s? earlier?). Had to install one upside down to make them fit the available space, but seems to be working. Certainly better than propping the box open with a stick, which is what I had been doing.

Put these on a Thule Adventurer (I think it is the 650, but not sure as someone gave it to me). They work great. It was a little confusing at first because the existing struts "bent" towards the inside on both the left and the right side. With these, one of them will bend toward the inside and another will bend towards the outside. Hopefully looking at my pictures it will make sense. Also, I used a rubber mallet to put them on. I braced the box with my knee and gave a good whack to the strut and it went on pretty easy. Wanted to also give props to Etrailer's web site. They had a lot of good information and helped me to find exactly what I needed. Would definitely use again.

Good description, and the hinge works for the left or right side, front hinges or side hinges Thule roof boxes.

- TH14933
by:

These hinges work well as replacements on the Thule Evolution double sided opening clamshell rack, but they do wear out over time. Specifically, the point at which they snap on to the metal ball on the clamshell gets worn out and won’t stay connected. I’ve replaced several of these hinges over the years, so I’d estimate they last about 3 ski seasons (I knocked the rating down from 5 stars because they wear out quicker than expected). They are inexpensive and easy to replace though… it’s just inconvenient to wait a week for replacement parts, so I bought 2 this time to have a spare. Note: I’ve found that a C-clamp or wood working clamp works well to install them. It takes a lot of force to pop them back into the metal ball.

The hinge support on my ski box failed last Thursday when I unloaded the skis at the end of a ski trip, this was all a puzzle to me, it took a moment to realize what had happened--those flimsy boxes are very unstable without these supports. Did my research, found etrailer--possibly the only source? My box is Sears Xcargo Xtreme. I didn't see that precise one on the list of Thule boxes that the part was for but some models seemed close enough--besides, there are only two supports to choose from, how wrong could I go? I paid the extra $ for Priority shipping bc I had another ski trip coming up and I need that box. It arrived promptly, I installed it today. If you subtract the time it took to take the box off the car and return it, the repair took about 5 minutes. I used the clamp with the screw handle that another reviewer recommended, I was not sure if I would have the hand strength to use the large vise grips that the man in the video used. I am a 71 year old woman. To my great relief, the new support worked perfectly and does seem more substantial than the original. I did buy a second one but decided to hold it in reserve, the other original seemed okay for now. (That may be a mistake). With my experience, the second one shouldn't take but about 3 minutes when that time comes. Now, off to Vermont for two more ski trips and no icy skis inside the car, which is the point of all this. Thanks, etrailer!! I have no idea what I'd have done without your excellent service.

Received everything and new hinge is installed on Thule box everything was straight forward except albeit after viewing how to remove socket screws with neddle nose pliers proved to be extremely difficult. Therefore I remove complete broken hinge and was able to force out with large standard screwdriver and press fit into new hinge with small vice.

- TH14933

Perfect replacement part! After watching a short video on YouTube I was able to remove the broken hinge and put on the new one in less than 10 minutes.

PERFECT! I have a really old (I mean VINTAGE) Thule Weekender and these new hinges were a perfect update from the old gas struts. They fit perfect and work perfect. etrailer always has fast shipping and great products and prices.

The strut works great! It is a little larger than the original but does the job well. Glad I found somewhere that stocks these older model’s parts.

Recently I bought a used Thule cargo box for the top of my Suburban. It had a broken strut and was told by the seller that I could find a replacement at etrailer.com. He was right so I ordered two. For that price having a spare seemed a good idea. They arrived within the week. Excellent service by etrailer.com. The ball joints of the strut and box snap together and I was concerned about cracking the box when removing the broken one so I checked YouTube. Sure enough, etrailer.com has a video on how to remove/install them. I had to use my biggest channel lock pliers to squeeze the new one on and put a small block of wood against the side of the box to protect it but not too difficult. The strut itself is plastic but seems adequate for the job it's meant? to do, hold up the top. As for installation, I'd recommend having a second person to hold up the top so you can have two hands free to work. Overall, the product, price and service were excellent. Thanks etrailer.com!

The hinges were a pain in the butt to install on the sears sport 20sv. (And removing old bits) But then again I took great care to avoid damaging the plastic cargo carrier. Also I understand Thule told etrailer these were the more appropriate part for this model for easier opening or closing, but with these I find I have t push the lid ALL the way up to stay open. It seemed to me the originals would take over after a partial lift and lift it the rest of the way for me. Either way happy I fixed my box. Price was good and lady very friendly on their customer service line.

- TH14933
by:

Part worked fine. Delivered per schedule. Training video on installation was good but hardware near me did not have the tool depicted with a large enough jaw. After looking at tools for a while in the hardware I choose a 5" C clamp. Before buying a tool, measure the depth of the lip of the material on the roof top carrier so you know how big a tool or clamp to buy. Place the C clamp in position and tighten the screw onto the part so the ball is pressed into the socket. The new strut is made better / sturdier than the original. My carrier box is a Thule Frontier, about 20 years old.

So genuinely impressed with my first experience with etrailer. Very reasonable prices, extremely quick turnaround in product delivery of the Thule struts I ordered. Able to track shipment, and updates from etrailer Customer Service throughout. Won't hesitate to utilize this company in the future, they have earned "Preferred Supplier" Status in my opinion! P.S. the imbedded install videos on the product webpage were extremely helpful. Very best, Sno-Bum Ski/Sport/Travel, Fine Wine & Dine... Purveyors of The Alpine Lifestyle!

I am very satisfied with this purchase. This hinge has made my Thule roof top carrier so much nicer. I was making do with a broken one, but now it stays open so nicely. It was easy to install, just popping the broken one off and squeezing the new one on. Well worth the money.

Perfectly fit our decade old Sears XCargo Sport 20 storage bin after one of the struts cracked. I replaced both as recommended, kept the unbroken strut as an extra backup should one ever crack on the road. Can dislodge the old item from its post with a flathead screwdriver. Pop the new strut on and can use an adjustable grip to click it tightly into place. Works perfectly.

A year later product is still working well. Has been through several trips and still durable.

The product order placement was an ease. Shipment was awesome to my house in 3 days, regular mail. And the product itself is excellent, easy to install and by far better then the original equipment. Highly recommend the product and etrailer for product replacement and satisfaction. I will definitely will use etrailer in the future for new and replacement ordering/shopping! Complete satisfaction!

Fit and works wonderfully with my Thule Weekender. I bought the box used for cheap and one hinge was broken. You probably want to replace both of you still have an original, these open a little higher so using one original will open lopsidedly.

Worked perfectly for my Thule Sonic XL. Old one popped off with a hammer and I used a C clamp to pop the new one on without any trouble.

  • Replacement Hinge for a Thule Classic Series Cargo Box
The difference between the Thule hinges or struts # TH14936 and # TH14933 is the spring tension. The shorter length boxes use the lighter spring strut, # TH14933.
