This Thule Dual Force Strut replaces a similiar part for Thule Roof Boxes and many others.**Life Saver on a Family Trip!**
While on a family vacation, one of the hinges on my Thule roof rack broke while unloading gear. This hinge wasn’t just for holding the lid up during use but was also crucial for keeping it stable while closed. With four humans, two dogs, and a car packed to the brim, getting home without the roof rack was not an option.
I didn’t want to spend hundreds replacing the entire container, but finding the specific hinge I needed quickly seemed impossible. Other retailers—yes, even *them*—couldn’t get me the part in time. That’s where eTrailer saved the day!
Their website made it easy to identify the exact part I needed, their prices were competitive, and their customer service was outstanding. They ensured the part shipped quickly, allowing me to fix the rack and get everyone—dogs, gear, and all—home safely.
Thank you, eTrailer, for your amazing service. You’ve earned a lifelong customer!
These replacements are a bit more substantial than original, not that original had any real issues. My need to replace was due to the mount hole, where the ball/pin connects to the hinge. The old ones had worn out ant eh hinge would fall off, upon opening the Thule. These took some effort to snap in but I am happy. EAsy fix for a box that would be nearly $1000 to replace.
Shipped quickly & suprisingly etrailer has more than just trailer parts
This strut replacement was easy to install thanks to the trailer video.
Finding the part was very easy and the shipment was fast. It fit perfectly and now my Thule roof box is usable again!
The hinge support on my ski box failed last Thursday when I unloaded the skis at the end of a ski trip, this was all a puzzle to me, it took a moment to realize what had happened--those flimsy boxes are very unstable without these supports. Did my research, found etrailer--possibly the only source? My box is Sears Xcargo Xtreme. I didn't see that precise one on the list of Thule boxes that the part was for but some models seemed close enough--besides, there are only two supports to choose from, how wrong could I go? I paid the extra $ for Priority shipping bc I had another ski trip coming up and I need that box.
It arrived promptly, I installed it today. If you subtract the time it took to take the box off the car and return it, the repair took about 5 minutes. I used the clamp with the screw handle that another reviewer recommended, I was not sure if I would have the hand strength to use the large vise grips that the man in the video used. I am a 71 year old woman.
To my great relief, the new support worked perfectly and does seem more substantial than the original. I did buy a second one but decided to hold it in reserve, the other original seemed okay for now. (That may be a mistake). With my experience, the second one shouldn't take but about 3 minutes when that time comes. Now, off to Vermont for two more ski trips and no icy skis inside the car, which is the point of all this. Thanks, etrailer!! I have no idea what I'd have done without your excellent service.
Put these on a Thule Adventurer (I think it is the 650, but not sure as someone gave it to me). They work great. It was a little confusing at first because the existing struts "bent" towards the inside on both the left and the right side. With these, one of them will bend toward the inside and another will bend towards the outside. Hopefully looking at my pictures it will make sense. Also, I used a rubber mallet to put them on. I braced the box with my knee and gave a good whack to the strut and it went on pretty easy.
Wanted to also give props to Etrailer's web site. They had a lot of good information and helped me to find exactly what I needed. Would definitely use again.
These hinges work well as replacements on the Thule Evolution double sided opening clamshell rack, but they do wear out over time. Specifically, the point at which they snap on to the metal ball on the clamshell gets worn out and won’t stay connected. I’ve replaced several of these hinges over the years, so I’d estimate they last about 3 ski seasons (I knocked the rating down from 5 stars because they wear out quicker than expected). They are inexpensive and easy to replace though… it’s just inconvenient to wait a week for replacement parts, so I bought 2 this time to have a spare. Note: I’ve found that a C-clamp or wood working clamp works well to install them. It takes a lot of force to pop them back into the metal ball.
Received everything and new hinge is installed on Thule box everything was straight forward except albeit after viewing how to remove socket screws with neddle nose pliers proved to be extremely difficult. Therefore I remove complete broken hinge and was able to force out with large standard screwdriver and press fit into new hinge with small vice.
Looking to replace our Thule roof box carrier hinges. Etrailer customer service was extremely helpful with finding the needed hinge - our roof carrier is perfect again!
Seems to be perfect replacement for my ski box. My only complaint is that it is wildly difficult to pop on the ball and socket joint. I had to use clamps and other tools to make it happen.
Perfect replacement hinge.
PERFECT! I have a really old (I mean VINTAGE) Thule Weekender and these new hinges were a perfect update from the old gas struts. They fit perfect and work perfect. etrailer always has fast shipping and great products and prices.
As advertised, good quality, arrived fast, price reasonable since the Thule is useless without it. No directions on how to install it - had to go online since the old one self-destructed and fell out. Needed a special vice grip to snap it in. Working well now.
Fit perfectly and lid opens easily now. And stays fully open. Challenging to press on. I did one by hand, but had to use a large C clamp to pull the other end onto the ball end on the box. Easy enough to do if you have a c clamp.
The product arrived today. Fit perfectly. Couldn't be happier. I have an older ascent 1100 model roof box.
At first, I was concerned that there's a "left" strut and "right" strut, since the thin part is on the bottom on one side and on the top on the other. But I installed it, and the box works as good as new. Thule Mountaineer Box.
As recommended in another review, I used a C-Clamp with a block of wood to pop it onto the metal ball.
etrailer shipped it out the day I ordered it, and it arrived sooner than expected.
thanks for the help in picking the correct part
After years of struggling with a one-elbowed Rocket Box, I snapped the two pieces of the old broken elbow off the ball joints. I pressed the replacement on using a bar clamp (and a block of wood). Now the box opens and closes much easier.

The parts are still working fine….granted I don’t use a ton and I know to be gentler with the system. But yes, it’s all good
