Video Transcript for Lippert Components Kwikee Step Motor Kit Review - 1993 Holiday Rambler

Speaker 1: Today on our 1993 Rambler, we're going to be installing Lippert Kwikee Step Motor Conversion and Upgrade Kit. Part number: LC379145.You're ready to get into your RV, you open the door, and nothing happens. Your steps don't work, they're just stuck in position. Well, looks like you need time for an upgrade or repair. In this case, our step motor isn't working properly and it continues to run regardless of when its retracted or extended position. That will end up draining our battery so we're going to go ahead and make some quick repairs. With this complete motor and electronic repair kit, everything's back in order. This Lippert component upgrade is designed to work with several old model Kwikee style steps. It will upgrade your whole motor and circuit board to the newer, more modern style. This is going to be a direct replacement for your step motor and controller.

It's going to bolt right back up to the same alignment holes, so everything's going to fit just like factory. It's going to tie right back into your same wiring so you can make all your connections right down here when you take your old motor off. It's also going to have connections for under step lamp, which may or may not be an option on your vehicle. The motor's linkage will tie right into your steps and it comes with new hardware so you won't have to reuse that cotter pin and push bit.Located in your door, you'll receive a new switch that's magnetic so there's no mechanical movement. Once them magnet comes near the other end of the switch, it closes it, grounding out your circuit causing your steps to retract back into the storage position. There are several different configurations you can wire your new motor up to to work properly with your RV. You can set it up so it only works with the door switch, opening and closing when the door open and closes, with a manual switch, or with a combination both. You can have it when turned on, it open and closes with a door and you can disable that setting with your manual switch.Included in your kit, you're going to receive your motor with linkage, your control unit, your connector for switches, door switches, and hardware. We'll begin our conversion by removing our old components.

We'll be removing our control unit and our motor linkage. We've got all of our old hardware removed. We can now begin installing our new motor. We'll take one of the bolts from the new kit, slide on the lock washer, align our motor up with the same holes that our old motor came out of, and thread in the bolt. We'll then do the same thing for the remaining three bolts. Both holes are located in each corner.Once you've got all of your bolts started, you can go ahead and snug them up a little bit.

Before you tighten them all the way down, we're going to want to line up our linkage to our step. It might be necessary to move your step in and out a little bit, slide the pin through the step and through your motor linkage out the other side, and then take the small cotter pin and put it through the edge of the hole on the pin.Once you've got the cotter pin through, just bend each side, you can now finish tightening down your hardware. You'll tighten down all your hardware with an 11 millimeter socket. If you can't get your socket to fit directly above the motor, you may need to use an 11 millimeter wrench. We can now install our new control unit. Now, there are three self tapping screws provided in the kit, however, two of our screws we're already damaged and have bolts that run down through the top as they have been oversized so we won't be able to use these for those holes. We can still use it for the one remaining hole in the back.

Go ahead and line that up.For these two holes, we reused the hardware that was already installed and we'll tighten those down with an 8 millimeter socket. The self tapping screws that come in our kit will just thread right in and we'll tighten those down with a quarter inch socket. We can now hook up our wiring. We're going to start with the small, darker, green wire. We'll connect that with one of the small self tapping screws to our inaudible 00:04:50 steps. Then tighten it down with a quarter inch socket. We'll then hook up the large, green wire to our chassis ground. There was already a stud running down through our steps over here on this side. It runs down from the bracket up on top connected to the chassis and through the steps. We're just reusing the existing hardware to connect it back to that same stud.If your RV has the same set up as your original steps and you're reusing the hardware, tighten down with a 15 millimeter socket or wrench. The purple and black wire coming out of your control unit, we're not going to using that on this particular vehicle, these are for your step light switch and your step light. Our model doesn't have either so both won't be used. We'll then take our two wire connector and plug it into our motor. You'll know it's the right one if it has a red and a yellow wire. Make sure that it clicks into place. We'll then need to connect our four wire connector. Before we connect it, we need to splice it into existing circuits or run those circuits. We're going to be able to splice right into our factory connector here, we'll just have to cut this connector end off and splice in the wires right to those wires. If you didn't have those already, your red wire would go to power, make sure you have it in line fuse. Your brown wire would go to your door switch that tells it when the door's open or not open. Your yellow and white wires go to a manual door switch so you can turn on and off your steps from the inside. We can now cut off our old connector since it won't plug into our new control unit. We'll peel back a little bit of the sheathing and cut each wire. Strip back the ends of each wire that you just cut and crimp a butt connector on the end of each wire that was stripped back. Butt connectors are not included in your kit, but you can pick some up here at etrailer.com. We're using heat shrink butt connectors so we can seal it up and provide new moisture or corrosion from getting in there later. We're going to crimp on a butt connector onto each of the wires we just stripped back. We'll then strip back some wire from each end of our new connector. I already pre-stripped, but you may or not want to strip back a little bit more to make it easier to connect. We'll now connect each wire to its corresponding color; red to red, white to white, yellow to yellow, and brown to brown. Now use your heat gun and heat shrink down all your butt connectors.Once everything's heat shrinked, just use some zip ties to clean up your wiring. Also included in your kit, you'll get a little clip that you can slip onto your motor and help hold that wiring up away from your step. Now everything's hooked up, it should work properly. When you open and close your door, it should open and close. Ours isn't so we're going to test our switch here and we likely have a bad switch. We popped the switch out with a flat bladed screwdriver, just working behind it, and now we've got access to our switch. We'll unplug our switch. It should activate our steps when it grounds out. A real quick way to test your switch if you don't have an inaudible 00:08:28 meter to verify if it's working, you can just jump these two wires together and see if your steps move. When there is an open not grounding your steps, your steps will be out. When your switch pushes in, it will ground out these two wires causing the steps to move inward. Let's go ahead and jump them together, and our steps move in. Now we know that our switch wasn't working properly. We've got our new switch from our kit and we're going to wire it into where our old switch went. This will just go right in here. There's another end that we'll have to place on the other side of the door, but there's no connections that goes to that. We'll cut off both of these ends, strip them back, and connect it to our switch. It doesn't matter which one you connect where. You can connect either gray wire to either color wire here. Before you start to button everything up, it's always to test and make sure that everything's working properly. This is the other end of our switch that we are mounting in the door and when they close, they'll come together. Here we can verify that when they come together the steps will close back in, and when the doors open and they're apart, they'll unfold. Since everything's working properly electronically, we can go ahead and mount our switches up.Also included with your kit, you'll get a small, black bracket. If you have an enlarged hole like we do in our case, you could use some self tapping screws to thread it into the door to take up some of that space making it easier to silicon or epoxy it in place. We'll drill a hole in our door now for the other side of our switch. We're going to use an 11/32nd drill bit. That way, we've got a nice, tight fit for our switch.I'll put a little silicon or epoxy around the other side of our switch and insert into the door. Now that we've got both of our switches installed, all we have to do is test everything out. Our steps retract properly and greet us when we come home. That completes or installation of Lippert Components Kwikee Step Promoter Conversion and Upgrade Kit on our 1994 Holiday Rambler.

Items were easily installed. When finished I had to reverse the motor wires as the steps worked back words. Also the step switch inside the door works in reverse but that is not a hardship. The light under the step wanted to stay on so I unplugged it. It's not my habit to look under the steps in the dark anyway. Bottom line is that the steps come out and go in as they should and that was the end result I was looking for...and I thought at a reasonable price compared to what the local repairs facilities wanted. 637841

On a scale of 1 to 10, the Lippert Components Kwikee Step Motor Conversion/Upgrade Kit is an 11. It was basically a plug and play unit. The wiring is color coded and matched the existing on my 2001 Challenger Motor Home. I would, however, recommend reading the instructions. They state you may have to install the new door magnet for the unit to operate, which was my case. But again, it was wired and color coded. Very happy with this product. It works perfectly !!! 436915

Great replacement for our 1994 Winnebago Chieftain double steps which were slow and hardly worked, would have to hit with a hammer to get it to open! This kit fit perfectly! The assembly was basically a bolt on. It came with magnetic door switches which had to replace the old switches and the replacement wiring harness that came with weather pack connections instead of the old molded rubber plugs made it a nice clean install. Now the steps open quick and quietly. Thanks! 523776

I had several calls from and to Michelle, who took it upon herself to double check whether the replacement Kwikee step motor/operator assembly would work in an older coach, as the literature said '99 and newer, while our coach is a '95 Monaco. The old unit died a natural death after 22 years, but Michelle was so certain it would work she advised if it did not, they would take it back! Our Model 40 steps now work better than ever, and we have had the coach 17 years-perfectly smooth and quiet, and the replacement took about two hours, total. You must replace the door switch, but that was included, as were clear instructions. Thank you Michelle, as the manufacturer suggested that I buy an entire step assembly, as "I had gotten my money's worth out of the old unit". I am continuing to, thanks to you. 420295

I have a 1999 Fleetwood Flair with the original model 32 Kwikee step. Through neglect, the steps began jamming and the stripped the gear in the gearbox. I originally purchased the replacement gear box (Item # LC379160) and upon receipt discovered it was not compatible with my old motor. This conversion/upgrade kit was my next purchase. etrailer paid for the return shipping of the incorrect linkage and I ordered this kit. It was required that I replace the 4 way harness with the upgraded model. This will require some heat-shrink connectors and zip ties to tidy things. After install the steps worked perfect in opposite until I replaced the included door magnet and removed my own. They looked the same but are different. Again, you'll need some heat-shrink connectors for this. 468639

VERY EASY install, I lengthened the mag door switch leads to clean up the wiring, making future maint. easier. Operational checks as advertised. Wiring diagrams and tech data also VERY helpfull. Quiet, Smooth operation. Had been experiencing intermittent operation and occasional gear box lockup with our unit. 667956

Motor & controller install in my 1998 Monaco Dynasty went fairly fast. However, whomever replaced it previously hid the step "lock" switch fuse in the hollow below the passenger's drink holder. It took several hours to discover why the step didn't lock extended. After finding the hidden blow fuse, it all works perfectly! 661714

Changed the magnetic door switch and step worked as it should. 90 minutes from start disassembling old components to testing and cleanup. Only disappointment is product made in CHINA if know this I would have looked elsewhere. 636324

Simple swap! Almost a plug and play item except for having to connect the new plug end via wire connectors. You do have to switch the wires on the magnetic door sensor too. Works better than the original! 628551

Did take some time to install but took time to do it right the first time.I will be using etrailer now. a gold mine find. 577712

I received my order a day ahead of time. I received a phone call from etrailer to make sure of the delivery address was correct, which I appreciated because the billing address and delivery address were different. They were concerned that someone may have gotten my credit card number. I was surprised but felt good about the call. etrailer also honored their lowest price guarantee with a refund to my credit card. This is a first class operation!!! 472090

You will instead need to use the Lippert Replacement Kit # LC379769. This kit will work perfectly with your steps and includes the IMGL (integrated motor/gearbox/linkage) and the 9510 Control Unit.
