Video Transcript for Thule Hitch Bike Racks 853-5829 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part number 853-5829. This is the Two Lead Replacent T3 Cradle Body for Thule bike racks. The T3 cradle body is going to slide onto one of the support arms of your bike rack and it's going to provide an anchor point for your bike frame. See here it's got the nice little indentions in there. That's going allow and cables that you may have running under your bike frame to sit in there nicely without causing any type of damage to the cables or to the frame of your bike. This unit's going to replace one worn out or damaged cradle body for Thule bike racks with one inch diameter arms. That's going to be the diameter of this central hole here.

It is going to require a rubber strap, part number 753-3535 to secure the bike. That's going to be sold separately. One end of the strap's going to secure in the indention right here. Then it's going to come over the actual cradle body. Then it's going to have holes in the strap that are going to loop around one of the two provided anchors there for the strap.

Again, this is designed for bike racks with one inch diameter arms. Bike racks that this would work with are going to be the Thule Ridgeline, the Thule Roadway, the Thule Revolver and the Thule Spare Me bike racks. Nice rubber construction here on the internal component that slides over the bike rack arm. That's going to provide that nice, tight, secure fit. Again, you've got the rubber pad right here to comfort the frame of the bicycle. Few measurements to go over with you real quick.

I want to measure the length of the rubber pad going this direction. That's going to give us a measurement of about 2 and 13/16ths of an inch. If I measured going this way, just measuring this center section here that rubber pad we're going to be looking at about 1 and 5/8ths of an inch. That's going to do it for our review of part number 853-5829. This is the Thule Replacement T3 Cradle Body for Thule bike racks.

These replacement parts allow me to continue using my "old" bike rack, which is still in great condition. The straps and cradles were simple to install and make the rack look like new! 561465

Bought these to replace the cradles on my 10 year old Thule rack which just wore out due to usage of travling with bikes to several states, thousands of miles in Canada as well as just minor trips in state. Thes fit very snug on the on the support arms which was my biggest problem with the old ones, as the bore of the hole was worn and it was hard to keep bikes in place. These work very well and restored the 10 year old bike rack to like new condition. 514973

Purchased this as a replacement cradle set on my older bike rack the actual replacement was discontinued and was told that this item would work. It turns out this works a lot better than the original one that came with the rack i may replace all the cradles with this type. Center cradles in the images are the new ones. I received the straps and the cradles quickly. They fit my Bell 3 carrier bike rack which I converted to a 2 carrier bike rack. They are difficult to screw on so I ended up spraying a little WD40 on the posts. I ended up with a blister but it was worth the end result. Thanks!!! 807051

Cradle better than original. I use the rack a lot and this part takes a beating. The originals were well used and this part looks more solid than the original. Glad I picked these up and then bought another set when I added another bike to the rack. 690191

I spoke with my contact at Thule and she informed me that you could use the Replacement T3 Cradle # 853-5829 as replacement cradles on your Thule 996 Expressway bike rack. For a strap you would want a Replacement Rubber Strap # 753-3535.

  • Replacement Cradles for Thule Hitching Post 4-Bike Rack

If you don't know what model you have then you can try sending a photo and I can go about trying to identify it that way. However, the Replacement T3 Cradle Body part # 853-5829 and the Replacement Rubber Strap part # 753-3535 will work for all but the 980, 984,...

Cradles that are attached to the straps like in the photo you provided are unfortunately not available. According to Thule, replacements for your Trailblazer 998 are going to be separate cradles and straps. The cradles are # 753-3535 while the straps are # 853-5829.

  • How to Attach the Thule T3 Cradle and Strap
It looks like you purchased the Thule T3 Cradle, # 853-5829, and the T3 Strap, # 753-3535. These two items should work well together so I made a short demonstration video for you. If you think you may have received a different strap or are missing a part, let us know so we can send you the correct parts.

  • Installing Replacement T3 Cradle Body for Thule Bike Carriers
To install the Replacement T3 Cradle Body for Thule Bike Carriers # 853-5829, you will need to first remove the end cap from the end of the bike support arm. A Phillips screw is what typically holds the cap in place. You will then use just a small amount of soap and water to help slide the existing cradles off the carrier. Once the cradles are removed, you will then orient the strap and cradle together and slide them back on in the correct position.

  • Replacement Cradle for Harbor Freight Bike Rack
The Replacement T3 Cradle Body # 853-5829 is designed to fit 1" tubes on the Thule Ridgeline, Roadway, Revolver and SpareMe bike racks, but if your Harbor Freight bike rack has a 1"" tube arm this will also fit on that. If your tube is 1-3/32" you can use the Replacement Control Block for RhodeGear # RG8890083 , or for 1-1/4" tubes the Replacement SuperCrush Cradle # 8880597 . If this bike rack has a different sized tube, let me know and I can recommend a different replacement cradle.

  • Replacement Straps Needed for Thule Easy Rider 3 Bike Trunk Rack
I spoke with my contact at Thule and the Easy Rider trunk mounted bike rack was discontinued back in 1995 so the replacement straps are no longer available but I do have a solution. You will just need to update your cradles by using the T3 Cradle Body, # 853-5829, and then use Rubber Strap, # 753-3535. These are sold individually so you would need 6 of each. A quick tip that we have found to work well when installing new cradles on a bike rack is to grab a can of aerosol hair spray....

If you wanted the added security of an anti-sway the Stay-Put has that upgradable option with # 853-7758. • Removing End Caps of Older Thule Helium to Replace Frame Cradles
If you have an older Thule Helium (sounds like you do) there is a chance that the cap at the end of the arm will be riveted on which will make removal difficult. • Frame Cradle with Anti-Sway Cage Recommendation for Bike Rack with 1 inch Diameter Arms
We have a set of Thule frame cradles that we know fit a 1 inch diameter bike rack tube, but the current Yakima cradles are larger so they would not work. The Thule T3 cradle, # 853-5829, fits on Thule bike racks with 1 inch diameter arms and would work well for you. The anti-sway cage needed is part # 753-3530 and the strap part # 852-3006-001.

  • Replacement Frame Cradles and Straps for Thule Spare Me Bike Rack 963XTR
For your Thule Spare Me bike carrier part # TH963XTR the correct replacement strap is the part # 753-3535 and then for the replacement cradle you'd want the part # 853-5829. Thule often times fits a few different racks with the same cradles and straps which I believe is why there's a bit of confusion. These two fit your bike rack as well as a few others.

The T3 rack replacement cradle # 853-5829 and the mating strap # 753-3535 will not fit on the rack as the tubing on the Helium is 1-1/2-inches in diameter. I confirmed this with my contact at Thule.

  • 2" Hitch Adapter for Thule Hitching Post 945
My solution for this is to approach it from another angle and REDUCE your hitch size, since the sleeve adapters that increase the hitch of this specific model, the Thule Hitching Post 945, are no longer widely available. I recommend the Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" # HT02 as a workaround for you. I attached a video showing how to install and use the reducer. This works with standard hitch pins bolts or a threaded hitch pins which it looks like you have on your rack.
