Video Transcript for Thule Hitch Bike Racks 853-7887 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the replacement Stay Put Cradle for Thule Bike Racks. This unit is designed to replace one Stay Put Cradle for your Thule Roadway, Parkway, Hitching Post Pro and Passage Bike Racks. It's made from a very durable plastic construction of black and color. The tube right here has a diameter of 1". It is designed to work with the optional Anti-Sway Cage that would keep bikes from moving front to back during transport. It's a really nice design.

The optional Anti-Sway Cage, if you don't have one, it is sold separately and available at etrailer.com. I also want to point out that the unit has these deep channel guides. These are going to guide the cables that run underneath the top tube frame of your bike. And so these cable guides provide an area for the cables to rest that keeps your bike cables safe and secure and keeps them from rubbing the frame of the bike during transport. The strap that goes over the bike frame is not included.

And installation is pretty easy. You simply need to remove the old cradle from the arm and slide the new one into place. That's going to do it for today's look at the replacement Stay Put Cradle for Thule Bike Racks.

I purchased these bike rack saddles for an older Bell rack. The original saddles had rotted. They fit the 1" rail fine with a little lube. The i=only issue I had, which is not an issue with the product, is that the flanges are fairly rigid and I needed to rest one on the upper rear fork behind the seat post, which is too wide. My solution was to rotate that saddle to fit the seat post and let the fork ride on the side of the saddle. By running the strap over the fork, the bike remains solidly connected.

These are factory replacements for my Thule Parkway bike rack. This is the only weak link in an otherwise super bike rack. The tabs that hold the rubber straps tend to break off. But I have to say that they last quite a while and my rack stays on my car year round, so they are exposed to weather extremes. The rack itself has exceeded my expectations for durability .and ease of use so these are cheap insurance for me to continue to use it. Its going on 4 years and it still works as well as the day I bought it!!!!

Cradle is still holding the bike as it should. No issues.

I have a 15+ year old Thule hitching post bike rack with 1" tubing. One of the cradle straps broke and I've been looking for a replacement. REI couldn't help me. I looked on Amazon but found what I wanted on etrailer.com for under $10. The old cradle had an integrated strap (bad design). I bought the 853-7887 cradle and a separate strap (852-3006-001). Worked great. It took a bit of elbow grease and wd-40 to wiggle it into the tubing. But it'll work just fine.

by:

Needed replacement cradle and straps for my 20 year old Thule hitch mount bike rack. Both online customer service reps I chatted with provided the same response: "Bike rack is not sold anymore. Cradle/straps are not available. Thanks for contacting us. Bye" Took a short bit of searching on the etrailer website to determine these replacement cradles were proper diameter to fit my rack. The clincher was a 2016 customer review indicating they'd used these cradles and straps on the same 'old' rack as mine. As such, can't say the online customer support provided any value. Product took 8 days to be delivered from midwest to my northwest home. Not an issue just seems inefficient particularly as it 'lost' two days here in town being transferred from UPS to USPS for final delivery. Product is as described. Works fine. Took a bit of effort (and lubricant) to push onto the 1" diameter tubes. Would like to have found/used integrated strap and cradle like the original product, but these work fine.

I had to replace the original cradle's on my bike rack, and these new ones have been great.

by:

Exact replacement of original part.

by:

I needed replacement parts for my Thule Apex 9027 (my best friends dog went to town on all the non-metal parts of my bike rack). Thule told me they do not make replacement cradles for this rack - it would have been a waste to have to buy a new rack. So I tried etrailer. I initially ordered the wrong size cradle (ordered for a 1 inch tube, needed for a 1 1/4 inch tube). Matt at etrailer was more then helpful. He helped search for the right cradle, pulled it from stock and called me back to make sure it sounded like the right fit!!
Who does that anymore??? EXCELLENT customer service!!!
This part worked perfectly! No need to spend $100's of extra dollars on a new rack.

by:

Unfortunately the knobs on these that hold the rubber straps eventually break off - this is my second set and I'm sure there will be another set. Five stars though for Etrailer for product availability, great prices, quick and cheap shipping.

by:

Easy install on 1” tube. Just smear a little diah soap in the tube first. Better than stock. Purchased a set to replace worn out stock Thule cradles. Wish I had purchased another set to replace the other pair as well because they are much better than original.

by:

I received the replacement Thule bike rack parts and they fit perfectly. The delivery was quick and items were as described, direct replacement, easy to install and very good price. Attached is picture of the replacement cradles and straps on the Thule Parkway carrier.

Thanks again, will definitely buy from etrailer.com again.

by:

Old Thule rack was getting kinda ratty looking, particularly the original rubber cradle/straps. These replacements are going to extend the life of my rack for years to come. As many people say they are hard to get on(deadblow followed by a touch of lubricant), but once in position they definitely look like they're there to stay. I've already ordered four more and a full complement of antisway cradles + straps to finish out my 4 bike rack. Etrailer shipping was quick and their customer service is solid.

by:

I do love these cradles and they worked fine for me AFTER a bit of alterations. So the 4 I ordered and received 9/15/17 DID NOT fit on the 1" pipe that my bike rack has equipped. Granted my rack isn't a Thule, these cradles are designed and claim to accommodate 1" diameter pipes all the same. So if you zoom in on the product pic on this website you can see the hole dimension shows 1" in diameter and SMOOTH. What you DON'T see are the ridges that are inside the hole of the cradles that I received, making that 1" diameter SIGNIFICANTLY smaller. Small enough to NEVER fit on a 1" tube. How do I know? Because I had to grind them off considerably for the cradles to even start go slide on. I did leave about 1/3 of each of the grooves on so the fit was tight enough to not slide around. So be warned, you may have to modify if you do receive these with the ridges inside. I used an oscillating spindle sander with 7/8" bit and I targeted each ridge individually as opposed to a 1" bit that would probably take too much off. Here's a pic. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pics of the ridges prior to sander them off.

by:

Very pleased with the prices and quality of products I've ordered from etrailer.com

by:

I used these to retrofit an old Thule Metro trunk rack that just had plain arms without cradles. It took some serious twisting and wrenching to get the cradles past the bend in the arms, but it can be done. These cradles plus the Anti-Sway Cage (853-7758) are a great upgrade. They keep the bike well away from the car and seem very secure.

by:

Works well but expensive (Thule)

by:

Direct replacement of original part.

by:

good replacements

by:

Easy to order. Replacement is in perfect, brand new condition and exactly as pictured. Received in a reasonable amount of time. I greatly appreciate they even have a short video clip on the "how to" to remove the old cradles from bike rack.

Still as strong as the day I purchased them. 100 satisfied.

by:

Held up well so far after one year. The Thule bike rack is very easy to use and durable. I see a bunch of them at my usual cycling destination.

by:

Quick shipping, parts are perfect and as expected!

by:

Great replacement on my belll bike rack. Fit really tight so that it wouldn’t slide at all.

by:

This product was used to hack an inexpensive bike rack from a big retailer.

by:

Was a simple job. Less than 5 minutes. Fit perfectly.

by:

So far, so good. We watched the videos on how to install and had no issues at all. A bit of soapy water and a rubber mallet to get things started, and voila! The old cradles were not too trustworthy, thanks to broken plastic tabs. Let’s hope the new ones last many miles!

  • How to Remove an Old Bike Rack Cradle and Slide on a New One
Bike rack cradles such as Replacement Stay-Put Cradle # 853-7887 fit very tight on the bike rack arm. To remove the old one first make sure the bike rack cannot move by securing it in a trailer hitch. Then grab the cradle with both hands and start rotating it a little back and forth several times. Once it feels like it is rotating easier continue to twist it back and forth while pulling it towards the end of the arm until you can pull it off. If the bike rack has an end cap at the end be...

  • How to Get Stay-Put (or Any) Bike Rack Cradle to Stay in One Place on a Bike Rack
I have 2 possible solutions for you that will get the Stay-Put cradles # 853-7887 to actually stay put. Solution one: hairspray. Its not just for creating sweet hair-dos anymore. The hairspray will at first be slippery, but it will then get tacky and sticky and hold the cradles in place. Solution B: electrical tape. Since you can't fatten up the arms of a bike rack by feeding it, you can wrap some electrical tape around the bars where the cradles will go. The fatter part of the bar will...

  • Tip for Installing Frame Cradles on Bike Rack that Don't Want to Slide On
The replacement frame cradle part # 853-7887 that you referenced while intended for a Thule bike rack it should fit on a cradle arm that measures 1 inch in diameter pretty easily. That said in some situations like yours it can be somewhat difficult to get them to slide on all the way. One of the tricks of the trade is to spray some hairspray on the bike rack arm and even in the cradle's hole. The hairspray will at first be slippery but will become tacky once it starts to dry. The Replacement Stay-Put Cradle # 853-7887 referenced in your question is indeed designed for 1 inch diameter tubes, so it could potentially work as a replacement for your Graber hitch-mounted bike rack. These will simply slide over the arm of the bike rack to provide the necessary attachment points for your bike. Keep in mind that these have not been tested with the Graber bike racks, but if your carrier does feature 1 inch diameter arms, then these may work great. I have also attached...

The Replacement Stay-Put Cradle, # 853-7887, fits snugly onto the arm of the Thule Roadway Bike Racks, # TH912XT or # TH914XT and is held in place with friction. It takes considerable force to move the cradles on the arms of the rack, though they can be moved.

  • What Material is the Thule Stay-Put Cradle Made of
The Replacement Stay-Put Cradle for Thule Parkway and Roadway Bike Carries, # 853-7887, is made of a plastic that is not completely rigid. To get the cap off of the Thule Parkway Bike Rack part # TH956 you will need to remove the one screw you have found. If you look at the bottom of the frame cradle (see pic I attached) you will see what looks like a rectangular rod connected three times to the bottom of cradle. Great news, there is an easy solution to this issue. The crossbar runs downhill towards the crank. Many bikes are like women's step through and alternative frames, have trouble staying on a bike rack.
