Video Transcript for Thule Hitch Bike Racks 853-7887 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the replacement Stay Put Cradle for Thule Bike Racks. This unit is designed to replace one Stay Put Cradle for your Thule Roadway, Parkway, Hitching Post Pro and Passage Bike Racks. It's made from a very durable plastic construction of black and color. The tube right here has a diameter of 1". It is designed to work with the optional Anti-Sway Cage that would keep bikes from moving front to back during transport. It's a really nice design.

The optional Anti-Sway Cage, if you don't have one, it is sold separately and available at etrailer.com. I also want to point out that the unit has these deep channel guides. These are going to guide the cables that run underneath the top tube frame of your bike. And so these cable guides provide an area for the cables to rest that keeps your bike cables safe and secure and keeps them from rubbing the frame of the bike during transport. The strap that goes over the bike frame is not included.

And installation is pretty easy. You simply need to remove the old cradle from the arm and slide the new one into place. That's going to do it for today's look at the replacement Stay Put Cradle for Thule Bike Racks.

this is a perfect replacement for the original that fell apart. Only took a couple of minutes to install. 117631

This replacement cradel is a little tight and difficult to slide onto the rack. But this makes it better than the original as it will not slide during a drive. Thus it is a great product and is at a reasonable price. Shipping was prompt. I've used Etrailer before and I will again. 178836

The products that I purchased from etrailer.com are just what I needed. There perform as expected. I was looking to find parts for my Thule hitch mounted bike rack. etrailer.com showed up as a supplier of such parts in Google. I checked out etrailer.com as well as other sellers by Google. Turned out that etrailer.com they had the parts I was looking for at the best price and the lowest shipping rates. This is the third time that I found what I was looking for at etrailer.com and at a great price. The service from etrailer.com was excellent (all three times). My bike rack pars arrived quickly and was just what I ordered. I'll shop here again. 557767

I have a 15+ year old Thule hitching post bike rack with 1" tubing. One of the cradle straps broke and I've been looking for a replacement. REI couldn't help me. I looked on Amazon but found what I wanted on etrailer.com for under $10. The old cradle had an integrated strap (bad design). I bought the 853-7887 cradle and a separate strap (852-3006-001). Worked great. It took a bit of elbow grease and wd-40 to wiggle it into the tubing. But it'll work just fine. 516224

I do love these cradles and they worked fine for me AFTER a bit of alterations. So the 4 I ordered and received 9/15/17 DID NOT fit on the 1" pipe that my bike rack has equipped. Granted my rack isn't a Thule, these cradles are designed and claim to accommodate 1" diameter pipes all the same. So if you zoom in on the product pic on this website you can see the hole dimension shows 1" in diameter and SMOOTH. What you DON'T see are the ridges that are inside the hole of the cradles that I received, making that 1" diameter SIGNIFICANTLY smaller. Small enough to NEVER fit on a 1" tube. How do I know? Because I had to grind them off considerably for the cradles to even start go slide on. I did leave about 1/3 of each of the grooves on so the fit was tight enough to not slide around. So be warned, you may have to modify if you do receive these with the ridges inside. I used an oscillating spindle sander with 7/8" bit and I targeted each ridge individually as opposed to a 1" bit that would probably take too much off. Here's a pic. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pics of the ridges prior to sander them off. 433607

I purchased this anti-sway cage and cradle to retro fit to my older Thule Passage rack. I bought the rack used from Craigslist and it did not have any clamps on the bike support arms, only some black plastic protective sleeves. I believe the rack was an older version of the 910XT. Thanks to the details on this site and awesome pictures I was confident that they would fit (pic shows all the dimensions was very handy) The items arrived in a well packed box with no instructions, but all you need to do is slide them onto the bars (and I am sure there is plenty of info and help on etrailer if I had asked :) ) The older passenger rack has upturned ends on the support arms so the cradles did not slide right on, but after a little WD-40 (which will eventually wash off, but the best thing to slide rubber grips on to new bars is actually hairspray. It allows the item to slide and then drys slightly sticky. I use it when I change grips on my MTB) they slide right on. I haven't checked them on the car yet but I am sure they will be great. Thanks 193243

I needed replacement parts for my Thule Apex 9027 (my best friends dog went to town on all the non-metal parts of my bike rack). Thule told me they do not make replacement cradles for this rack - it would have been a waste to have to buy a new rack. So I tried etrailer. I initially ordered the wrong size cradle (ordered for a 1 inch tube, needed for a 1 1/4 inch tube). Matt at etrailer was more then helpful. He helped search for the right cradle, pulled it from stock and called me back to make sure it sounded like the right fit!! Who does that anymore??? EXCELLENT customer service!!! This part worked perfectly! No need to spend $100's of extra dollars on a new rack. 144951

Old Thule rack was getting kinda ratty looking, particularly the original rubber cradle/straps. These replacements are going to extend the life of my rack for years to come. As many people say they are hard to get on(deadblow followed by a touch of lubricant), but once in position they definitely look like they're there to stay. I've already ordered four more and a full complement of antisway cradles + straps to finish out my 4 bike rack. Etrailer shipping was quick and their customer service is solid. 541895

This product did Not fit per Q&A on website. It was for 1” bike carrier bars but with the internal splines took it to 15/16”..not going on with soap and water. However, I used a 1” paddle/butterfly hole drill bit and it removed the splines for a near perfect fit. Secure the saddle tight before using the drill. Even though a few bumps in the road, it turned out okay. A good saddle bracket. 659612

Great. These should work on any bike rack with a 1 in diameter round tube that holds the bike. It may take a bit of work to get them on but they should fit any 1 in round tubular support arm. I upgraded an old bike rack. 582560

- 853-7887

Strong, well-constructed bike cradle. Wiil fit many bike racks with tubes 1" DIA. The sides of the cradle are a little tall so a thinner bike frame may not be gripped as firmly as a thicker frame. 578520

Excellent product. Made my old Bell bicycle rack practically new again where it was un-usable before. The old plastic holders had broken and the bikes were resting on the metal bar. And the new rubber straps are excellent as well. Makes bungi cords obsolete. I only use them now out of habit. 553756

These are a bit difficult to apply but I just used WD40 and a two hand push and twist motion and they slide down the bar and stay snug in one position. The Thule straps fit nicely on to these cradles. My old Thule rack looks quite updated now! Thanks! 550177

This is a good quality cradle that won't slide in travel. There was a mix up on the order but customer service was awesome, they contacted me the next day and had the issue resolved. A big shout to Ashley E. and Jessica B., they were awesome. Thank you girls, keep up the great job! This is my first time ordering from e trailer and I will definitely be a return customer for all my needs. Also, order processing and shipping is quick, they don't mess around! This is a world class organization! Thank you! Graig Hair 512106

First inspection of products reveal good quality and good turn around on order. I have not installed then yet but clearly there isn't going to be a problem. I am really glad to find someone with these items in stock after my old cradles and straps failed leaving my Trek Madone hanging by one wheel, skipping as the other wheel bounced on the pavement! 505581

Thule cradle and strap replacements work well. Had to pound cradle on to metal arm with a rubber mallet. Cradle cups bike frame well and strap elasticity makes attachment to cradle easy. 492797

I bought these to replace the OEM nylon-strap cradles on a 6-year-old Allen 5-bike hitch-mounted carrier. These are a nice upgrade. The Thule cradles are 3/4" longer than the Allen cradles, so I had to cut down the Allen rack's plastic spacers--a simple task. The Thule cradles are also wider and deeper than the Allen cradles, so the oversize frames on my family's mountain bikes fit better. And the Thule cradles are made of a softer plastic. Hopefully, this will remedy one of the problems I had with the Allen cradles: The plastic was so hard, just the swaying of the bikes would wear down the bikes' paint on long (500+ mile) drives. Thule's stretchy rubber "ripple" straps (sold separately) are also easier to tighten than Allen's nylon-strap-and-buckle system--and they stay tight. Another reviewer commented that he had to cut down the splines on the inside of the Thule cradle so it would slide over the arms of the Allen rack. I have a better way: Spray the inside of the cradle and the rack arms with hairspray (just as you would with bike handlebar grips); this both softens and lubricates the plastic temporarily. Then tap the cradle onto the rack arms with a mallet. As the cradle drives onto the arm, the arm will shave off just enough of the cradle's inner splines. When the hairspray evaporates, the cradle will fit snugly on the rack arm, with just enough play so one can rotate the cradle to accomodate different bike frames. These cradles breathed new life into a 6-year-old, much-used Allen rack. I'm looking forward to many more years and miles of use from the refurbished rack. 476266

I chose this web site due to the positive reviews and the question and answer section. I needed replacement cradles for my Bell bike rack. A previous question similar to mine prompted me to order the Thule cradles. They work great and are a much superior product. I found them difficult to install until I heated them in hot water, then they went on without much effort. These hard rubber cradles look more durable and secure than the original equipment. 470560

Appears to work well. I actually have a Bell bike rack with similar sized tubes. It's a tight fit but I think it will work well. 456494

I need a bike rack. I had a bike rack, but the straps broke. I thought I would have to junk it and buy a new one. Then, I found all these spare parts for the Thule bike racks. The good news is that not only are the parts better than the OEM straps, they didn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks to etrailer.com, my bike rack is better than new and we can take our bikes camping again. 450609

  • Frame Cradle and Anti-Sway Cradle Recommendation for Allen Bike Rack with 1 inch Arm
  • The # 853-7887 is designed to fit a 1 inch diameter tube. Since the arms of your rack are 1 inch in diameter this cradle would work, and then for a strap you could get the part # 852-3006-001. For a anti-sway cradle you would want the part # 853-7758.

However, I wouldn't think it is out of the ordinary for one to last a decade. The only thing that really wears down on hanging bike racks like the Thule Hitching Post Pro part # TH934XTR are the cradles but they can easily be replaced with the Replacement Stay-Put Cradle for Thule Parkway and Roadway Bike Carriers part # 853-7887.
