Features to know about

Built to Tow Big: 20,000 lbs GTW and 5,000 lbs Vertical Load

This hitch is rated for 20,000 lbs gross towing weight and 5,000 lbs tongue weight, giving you the strength to pull large fifth-wheel trailers with confidence. The sturdy steel construction and carbide powder coat finish make it solid and durable for heavy-duty towing. It mounts above the bed rails for a secure setup that feels locked in mile after mile.

Locked-In Connection Every Time: Interlocking 2-Jaw System with 360-Degree Contact

The rounded, interlocking two-piece jaw wraps completely around the king pin for full 360-degree contact. That tight connection keeps the trailer steady with less rattle and movement compared to slide-bar designs. The result is a quieter, smoother ride and a more confident hookup every time you tow.

Quick Visual Check Before You Roll: Three-Point Color Indicator System

A quick look at Curt’s color-coded indicator tells you exactly what’s going on—red for uncoupled, yellow for ready to couple, and green when you’re locked for towing. The indicator can be seen from the cab or at the hitch, so you always know your status before pulling away.

Smooth and Quiet Ride: Fully Articulating Torsion Head

The fully articulating torsion head absorbs road shock and helps suppress towing noise. It self-aligns as you back in, making hookups easier and keeping your ride stable and quiet over rough roads. It’s a setup that feels controlled even when hauling heavy loads across long distances.

Easy Removal for Truck Bed Space: Fast 1-Pin Head Removal

When it’s time to clear out the bed, you can lift off the head by pulling a single pin—no tools needed. The design makes it possible for one person to remove the hitch when not towing, so switching from tow mode to open bed space is simple.

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses the interlocking two-jaw system right here, which provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also, on the front of each jaw, over here and over here, you can notice there's two built-in grease zerk fittings, which will give you easy lubrication of the jaws. This hitch does use a fully articulating torsion head for controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hookup, and helps suppress road shock to reduce any bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a very short-throw single-handle operation. The nice thing about it, also, it does self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. Now, when you put this together, when you mount the crossmember to the legs, there's three rows of holes on the crossmember, so it actually will give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head, and you want that to be as close as possible, so when you're towing your fifth wheel with your tow vehicle, you want those level. It gives you three choices, anywhere from thirteen inches of hitch height adjustment up to seventeen inches. One of the nice features on this is the three-point indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in.

What's nice about it is that it's color-coded. Let me just swing this around so you can be able to see. If you notice, right under the hitch head, right here, you'll notice right now it's showing solid green. That means the jaws are completely closed. If we had a kingpin in there, the green would mean you're ready to tow.

This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. What's nice about those colors and looking, if you're in the cab, the cab would be right here, you can turn around as you're hooking up or uncoupling and watch the color, and when it changes, it tells you the position of the jaws. Basically, the green, like it is now, the jaws are locked closed; it's safe to tow. If it goes to yellow, let me just unhook this and pull out the handle. You can see right now, because I opened the jaws, it's showing yellow. Yellow means the jaws are ready to couple.

It's safe to back in the truck to couple up to your fifth wheel. It if would show red there, that means the jaws are locked open, and it's safe to pull your truck away. When it's red, you do not want to couple. Also, this has a nice fast one-pin head removal, makes it very easy for one person to remove the hitch. Back here, there's a clip you can pull out, and then you can pull this large pin out, and that'll allow you to take the head out of the crossmember so you can take it apart in pieces, which makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Also included with this . Let me roll this around here. There we go. Included with this, I have laid out, comes with the plastic loop plate right here. This plastic loop plate will go onto your kingpin and lets the kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with, you can see, the pins and clips for attaching the legs to your base rails. This is a simple installation with base rails and an installation kit. Now, the base rails and the installation kit we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This fifth wheel hitch is compatible with B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. This is a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish. Again, the specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. We had mentioned the hitch height adjustment from thirteen inches to seventeen inches. What I'm going to do now is, we already have the jaws open, ready to couple, showing yellow, so what I want to do is here's an example. This is what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. When you go to hook up, your kingpin would slide in between the two jaws, just like this, and once you get it far enough, your jaws will completely wrap around the kingpin. You notice the handle automatically slides up. The holes line up, so you just take your pin and clip, drop your pin into the hole, clip it, and that'll lock the handle. Now, the hole is large enough, you could actually put a padlock on there if you wanted extra security. It does come with this attached pin and clip. With the handle locked, you look back here at the color, it's showing green. That means you're all ready to tow. Again, to uncouple, you just pull your pin out, open it back out, and go, be able to back right out. That should do it for the review on the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity.

It fit my truck and’s was exactly what I needed

by: Alfredo 08/07/2018

Perfect fit, easy installation I’m happy with the product.

by: Sam Smith04/01/2020

Product was great, installation instructions were well written and easy to follow.

I think after using it for about 5,000 miles of pulling our fifth wheel there must be a better system out that reduces the expected jarring from the movement of the hitch due to needed clearance to use pins.

I might have the hitch welded to the rails or find one that is not removable.

If you have a solid mount hitch, please let me know.

by: Rodney J03/10/2018

Simple install, didnt have to drill frame ,seems to be very heavy duty

by: Joel P.03/24/2014

Before even starting the install I was sure to read the directions a couple of times to make sure this was something I wanted to attempt on my own. I hadn't installed a hitch before but had assumed since it was a custom kit it wouldn't be too difficult. The directions stated that the total install time for the diy'er was 180 mins. I read through and took note of all the tools I was going to need. What I would have REALLY appreciated was a "tools required" list at the top of the instructions. I thought I had all the tools needed but at the very end when you get to the rear rail you need a 7/8" bit for the bottom of the bed support. I advise you have one at the ready. I had to hone it out with my 9/16 which was a giant pain. Everything else went really smooth. On my particular application I had a real hard time torquing the front right bed bolt on the rear rail to spec (110ft-lbs) as the mount for a cross-bar makes it nearly impossible to fit a torque wrench in. (I ended up having to use 3/8" drive extensions to go up inside the bucket and torquing it from the bottom.

Total time:(including a couple of breaks, meltdowns, and a bunch of swearing and a 2yr old hiding dad's parts) 180 mins. Touche' Curt Mfg., touche'...

Experience level of installer: None

This is something that the average person can do. Make sure to watch all the helpful videos here on etrailer.com, read through the directions before starting, and make sure you have all the necessary tools to help ensure your installation goes as smooth as possible.

Haven't had a chance to use the hitch yet but I got it installed without too much trouble. It took about 4 hours to install, the frame mounting brackets and rails, at a leisurely pace. The unit seems to be very sturdy and it is certainly built heavy. I'm looking forward to testing it out soon.

by: Antonio05/06/2017

Excellent product. It took about 6 hours to install. The customer service is second to none and is highly recommended.

by: William05/06/2024

Love it. Easy to take apart and move! The instructions were very clear on how to assemble. I pull a 43ft camper and have yet to have any problems! Well worth the $$

by: Alejandro05/21/2022

Very nice piece!Arrived sooner than expected. I have the A16 version, that I used for a 10k Lbs 5th wheel and that handle very well but now I'll be towing a 16k tow hauler so I know this a20 will do just fine. And I love the locking jaw versions. I feel these are most secured in any type of towing.

Excellent hitch, took two of us 10 minutes, during a rain storm lol, to put together and install! As far as towing our Redwood 5th wheel it performed flawlessly, easy to hook up and the ride was super smooth and no noticeable bucking!

Thank you for such a fine product!! We installed the fifth wheel hitch in my 2015 RAM 2500 Mega Cab without any problems. It took us 5 hours to complete the installation and all the brackets and bolts went in without an difficulties!!

by: nefty 11/26/2024

A little tight to get into but overall a pretty simple straight forward install. Great quality and heavy duty material.

by: Dave B09/19/2017

Hitch slid into existing rails after a very minor adjustment. Took my son and I about 25 minutes to assemble, torgue bolts and adjust rails in the bed of my truck. we have used it twice already and camper did not bang and pop like it did on old worn out receiver.
The ordering process was also very smooth. Kelsey took the time to explain the differences in the hitches before I made my decision!
I Would recommend both etrailer and this hitch if you are looking to change out!

by: Donald09/05/2020

Hitch came packed well even though the box looked banged up. Everything was still undamaged and in good usable condition, just minor scuffs. I think this unit will have more when I get done with it. Watched a you tube video from curt on installation and had little trouble installing the hitch following the enclosed guidelines. Everything lined up according to plan. I think the hardest part was getting access by the heat shield. Tough spot to work on but I had help from a younger, more adapt helper who was able to manage just fine. A creeper for underneath was super handy and a 6 foot ladder to climb in and out of the bed made it a whole lot easier. Really did not need to use a lift. Would have made it a bit harder to work in the bed. My truck is quite high which allowed nice working space underneath.

by: Daniel03/05/2026

From start to finish the experience was very enjoyable. The customer service team was amazing and everything happened just as promised.
The same hitch at my local trailer store cost much more.
Would definitely recommend etrailer to anyone.

I have towed with the Curt A20 for a few thousand miles. I really like this hitch. The visual hooked versus unkooked indicator is awesome. It operates flawlessly. I do get some chucking over bridge expansion joints. However, it seems like most people have this problem. On normal roads it pulls great.

  • Recommended 5TH Wheel Hitch For a 2022 Ram 2500 With Ram Box Bed
With your 2022 Ram 2500 having the Ram Box storage in the bed you will need to use a fixed hitch with a pivoting pin box like the Sidewinder # RP34FR. You will not be able to use use the Pull Rite/Demco Autoslide type hitches as they will not clear the bed sides. The pivoting pin box changes the turning point from the 5th wheel hitch to the attachment point on the 5th wheel trailer. This prevents the chance of damage to your bed rails and allows you to make full jackknife turns without...

Hey Cody, thanks for reaching out. I can definitely help with this. You are already on the right track. It is possible to transfer the Curt hitch in your picture over to your new 2023 Ram 1500. Your Curt hitch is actually sitting on top of a rail adapter like part # C88KR, meaning the hitch is made to fit the industry standard 5th wheel rails. • How to Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer with 2018 RAM 2500 w/ Ram Box and Air Suspension
The only way you can safely tow a fifth wheel trailer with a Ram truck that has a Ram Box is with a Sidewinder pin box replacement as the pin box would no longer swing to the sides in the truck bed and hit the narrower bed rails. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one. There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer. Once...

Hey Matthew, since the Blue Ox Patriot hitch part # BWRVK3255 is designed to fit above bed rails all you'd need to install it in your 2022 Ram 2500 is a custom fit set like the Curt part # C16427-204 which are also perfectly compatible with the Patriot hitch since all of the rails in this style are made to the same dimensions. Then for a 7-way kit the part # 41157 will allow you to add a 7-way up in the bed of your truck for easier access to your trailer.

We can get your 2019 Ram 2500 short bed with RamBoxes set up with a 5th wheel hitch, and you'll need a fixed hitch instead of a slider because your 5th wheel trailer will require a Sidewinder rotating pin box. A Sidewinder moves the pivot point from the hitch jaws to the turret, and without it you won't be able to make turns because a standard pin box will contact your RamBoxes. That said, since you asked for options, for a 5th wheel hitch, here is one that I highly recommend for a light...

If you have the long bed you need one of the following: -Curt Q20 5th Wheel Hitch # C95NV (With prep package) -Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16130 (Fits # C16427-204 above bed rails or any other industry standard rails) The Q-series hitch typically used if you have a short bed and need a slider is the Q24. We have the following...

It is possible that your industry standard rail system in your 2020 Ram 2500 may fit in your 2014 Ram 2500 Diesel but without knowing which brand or part number you have I can not say for certain. You will want to use all new hardware if you are able to transfer the kit over. Below are the 5th wheel industry standard rail kits that fit both of your trucks: Reese Quick-Install Custom Outboard Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches item # RP56009-53 Reese Quick-Install...

  • Is there A Weight Rating for Fifth Wheel Rails in the Bed of the truck?
Trevor, it's nice to hear from you. There is not really a weight rating on fifth wheel rails since they are bolted to the trucks frame. The weight rating would depend on the fifth wheel hitch you use in the rails of the 2021 Ram 2500. Which hitch are you thinking about? Curt has a few nice fifth wheel options. How long is your bed? Can I ask your price range?

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch Rails for a 2018 Ram 2500 Using a Curt A16
Troy, the universal rails # C16200 will work, but if you're interested in a custom kit that won't require any drilling then I'd recommend going with the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ram Truck # C16427-204. These rails will work with Curt, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley hitches, and is assembled in the USA.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Base Rails for a 2024 Ram 2500
Congrats on the new truck! To add a set of 5th wheel rails to your 2024 Ram 2500, I recommend the Curt Custom 5th Wheel Installation Kit for Ram Truck item # C16427-204. These rails install with custom fit brackets that install in pre-drilled holes in your Ram's frame. This kit fits both the 6-1/2' and 8' bed lengths. I have linked an installation video below to help you get these rails set up. To make towing with a 5th wheel easier, I recommend adding the Curt 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Custom...

  • Solution for Curt Q20 Fifth Wheel Hitch with Loud Clunking from Jaws
Since the jaws of your Q20 can't be adjusted or replaced your best solution is going to be a new hitch like with the Curt A20 part # C16140 which is the newer version of what you have now which has a much tighter jaw design that will be quieter and last longer. Instead of the two jaw pieces coming together and just touching each other in the middle the A20 jaw has two pieces that lock together.

  • Is the Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch Compatible with the Lippert Rota-Flex Pin Box
I spoke with my contact at Curt who said that the A20 5th Wheel Hitch # C16140 is compatible with the Trailair Rota-Flex 5th Wheel Pin Box without any additional components. He did say that they have heard of instances where the rubber pad on the Rota-Flex pops out of place which results in it prematurely wearing down the head unit of the A20 but since that problem is with the pin box you would have this same issue with any 5th wheel hitch. If you are replacing your pin box and this makes...

The zerk fittings for the Curt A20 hitch part # C16140 are located on the front of each jaw.The jaws must be in the closed and locked position for the zerks to be accessible. They are kind of hard to see but I attached a picture that points them out. Curt recommends high pressure grease like the part # L11465. If you need a grease gun we have part # L30200.

  • Parts Needed To Use a Curt A20 5TH Wheel Hitch In Bed of a 2017 Ford F-350 With OEM Puck System
I have 2 options for you Simon to mount your Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch # C16140 in your 2017 Ford F-350 with the factory puck system. The first and easiest is the Adapter Rails # C88KR which you found. This will mount into your 4 outer factory puck holes and gives you the same mounting points your Curt hitch fits into. Do understand this will add 2-1/2" to the height of your hitch so you may need to adjust your mounting holes. We also have the Legs # C16017 you can mount to your Head #...

  • Can Head Unit From Curt Q20 Be Used On Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch?
Hello Rick, thanks for reaching out. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but your best option here will be to get a whole new hitch. The Q20 hitch system has basically been discontinued and replaced with the A20 series hitches. The head units and bases are not interchangeable between the two hitches. I know what you mean about the handle and slider on the Curt hitches being tricky to operate. This is the case with all of their hitches. If you want something better, take a look at...

  • Towing 19K Toy Hauler With 18K Rated 5th Wheel Hitch
According to my research, the 2007 Silverado 2500 Classic has a towing capacity that varies from about 10,100 to around 15,000 lbs depending on how the truck is equipped so you'll definitely be exceeding the towing capacity of the truck as well as that of an 18K capacity 5th wheel hitch. Does the 19K figure you stated for the weight of the toy hauler represent its GVWR or is that it's dry or weight? The dry weight would typically be quite a bit lower. I couldn't recommend towing in excess...

  • Trouble with Locking Handle Engaging on the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
I spoke to my contact at Curt about your Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 and they informed me that the locking handle issue is likely a result of improper lubrication. For starters, I would take some brake parts cleaner and spay down the jaws and the locking handle to ride any debris. Once you have let the jaws and handle mechanism dry then you can take some LubriMatic White Lithium Grease part # L11354 and work it onto these components while moving them back and forth to...

Yes, the Curt E-Series like part # C16115 fit the same base rails as the Curt A-Series like part # C16140 so you can switch between the two without issue. The old base rails will stay attached to the truck bed and you'd simply just swap out the hitch for one another.

For a 17,000 lb trailer for which I am assuming is dry weight, I would error on the side of caution and use a 5th wheel hitch rated for at least 20,000 lbs. For a 20,000 lb 5th wheel hitch, I recommend the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16541 for long beds or part # C16140 for short beds. The Curt 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches are excellent options. They have a pivoting head that makes hooking up the travel on unlevel ground easy. In order to install this hitch on your truck you...

  • Why Would Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch Chuck with Travel Trailer
Hey Matt, that's frustrating to hear but my first question is what type of wedge are you using for the pin box and the A20? If it's a universal wedge that would be what I'd think the issue is. The custom fit wedge you'd need is the part # C16992. That should tighten up chucking quite a bit. Let me know what you have now for a wedge and we can go from there. Also if you see where the movement is that is causing the noise let me know.

  • Recommended 5th-Wheel Hitch that is Easily Removed on 2014 Ram 1500
Choosing the right 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch for your 2014 Ram 1500 will depend first on the weight of the trailer you plan on towing. You will want to make sure the truck and hitch have weight capacities that exceed the trailer's loaded weight. Since your Ram 1500 has a short 5-1/2 foot bed, the safest way to tow a trailer is to use a stationary 5th-wheel hitch and replace the pin box on the trailer with a Sidewinder, if it does not have one already. The Sidewinder will be required to add...

  • Is it Normal for Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch to Make Noise Starting/Stopping
Hey Doug, what you are describing is pretty normal and is referred to as "chucking". Some hitches have a little looser tolerances in the jaw design that can cause this and/or some trailer king pins are a little worn out which allows for more play as well. The A20 doesn't have a reputation for being noisy so I wouldn't suspect it being the problem but there isn't any type of adjustment on it's jaws.

Curt does offer a fifth wheel hitch that fits that rail kit directly though with the A20 part # C16034. Another option is the B and W Companion Hitch and Gooseneck setup that consists of the rail kit/gooseneck hitch # BWGNRK1116-5W and then the fifth wheel hitch part # BWRVK3500-5W. • Correct Curt 5th Wheel Install Kit for a 2020 Ram 3500
The correct Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for a 2020 Ram 3500 is part # C16430-204. The Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit is a custom bolt-on fit with no cutting or drilling required into the frame. If you don't already have a fifth wheel hitch, the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 is my recommendation because of the interlocking dual jaw system which has a tight grip on the king pin and works to reduce chucking and jarring.

They both have a Gross Towing Weight of 20,000 lbs, a Vertical Load Limit of 5,000 lbs, and a height range of 13-17 inches. The articulink rear suspension on your 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon will not cause any issues with a set of airbags or a 5th wheel hitch because they all install in slightly different locations on the vehicle and do not counteract one another. For a set of airbags, I recommend using the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs part # AL57289 because they do not require any drilling into the truck frame and they do not interfere with the brackets for a 5th wheel hitch. • Best 5th Wheel Hitch For A 2022 Ram 2500 With Ram Boxes

It's not just jackknifing that can cause the pin box to make contact with the side of the bed, so it is very highly recommended.
