we are looking to buy a travel trailer with a ball coupler that is labeled with 2 5/8. can you use a 2 5/16 ball with that coupler?

Yes, you can use a 2 5/16" hitch ball, like the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 1-1/4" Diameter x 2-3/4" Long Shank - Chrome - 20,000 lbs # 63840, on a trailer that has a 2 5/8" Coupler. You will just want to make sure that you get the shank that is the correct size for the hole on your ball mount.
