Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - 63840 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a 2-5/16" hitch ball from Draw-Tite. This hitch ball installs onto a ball mount and provides a connection point for your trailer's coupler. It's made from a durable, cold-forged steel construction with corrosion resistant chrome finishing. It does come with the lock washer and the nut, so all that's included. The fine thread design provides a very tight, strong grip. The wrench flats make it easy to hold the ball in place while tightening the nut.

You can use a 2" wrench here at the flats. Again, the ball diameter is 2-5/16". Weight capacity is engraved right here on the top of the ball, 20,000 pounds. When it comes to the shank, this shank has a diameter of 1-1/4". It has a length measurement of 2-3/4" long. This is designed to fit a drawbar thickness of 3/8" to 1" thick.

The nut is a 1-7/8" nut with a torque rating of 450 foot pounds. The product's covered with a limited lifetime warranty and when installing this, you would place this through the ball hole on the drawbar. Then, on the underside of the drawbar, you place on the split lock washer followed by the nut. Then, you can just go ahead and get everything hand tight. Then, you can use a socket and wrench to get everything tightened down to the proper torque ratings as specified in the instructions. That's going to do it for today's look at the 2-5/16" hitch ball from Draw-Tite..

The folks at etrailer.com were very helpful and professional in assisting me obtain an alternative to my initial order which was on back order until December due to the Covid-19 virus. I initially ordered the Curt Rebellion XD Shock-Absorbing Adjustable Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 6-1/4" Drop - 15K with a 2" and a 2 5/16" stainless steel balls. Due to their diligence I was able to learn of the backorder status immediately. Consequently, they were able to provide a work around (chrome balls as opposed to stainless steel). While their dedication facilitated on-time delivery. I not only recommend them, but I will definitely shop with them again. 895715

I like this ball for its 20K capacity. I like to have a good margin of error on trailer balls. I also like this ball for the wrench flats compared to using a pipe wrench to hold the ball while tightening it on the hitch. The 2-¾ inch shank worked perfect for the heavy receiver hitch I installed the ball on. 845065

Not a lot to say about a hitch ball. This one is especially nice because the ball end has squared off sides for wrench tightening. So many of these are round balls mounted on a round stem. First thing you do is scratch them up with a giant channel lock. Not this one! 792613

I ordered a Curt 2-1/2" (1/2" rise - 2"drop) forged ball mount and a matching Curt 2-5/16" ball from etrailer on Monday. They arrived today (2 days later!) at the campground where I am staying. Like all Curt products, the quality looks great. Thank you etrailer! I could have saved over $250 had I called you guys first rather than listen to "experts" at local trailer stores when they told me what rise/drop I needed. I won't make that mistake again. 763067

  • How Tall is Trailer Hitch Ball 63840
I went and measured the height of ball # 63840 and from the bottom of the base to the top of the ball is 3.16 inches. That is a hair over 3-1/8 inches tall. I have found that this is a fairly common measurement having measured numerous hitch balls over the years.

  • Will a Trailer Hitch Ball with a Raw Finish Last as Long as a Ball with a Chrome Finish
A chrome finish ball is going to look good but it will not be corrosion resistant. A ball with a machine finish like # C40041, is going to have about the same corrosion resistance. In terms of performance they will wear at about the same rate under normal use. The best balls in terms of corrosion are going to be stainless steel followed by zinc coated balls. But in terms of balls that have a 30,000 pound capacity and a 1-1/4 inch shank, ball # BWHB94004 or # C40085 are the only options....

  • Budget-Friendly Weight Distribution Hitch for 7,000 lb GVWR Trailer
We can get you the right weight distribution set up for your trailer with a GVWR of 7,000 lbs. That is the most important factor because a trailer's tongue weight when loaded is on average about 12 percent of its GVWR, and the right weight distribution setup is one in which your total tongue weight falls somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity. • Why Would Trailer Become Unattached to 2 inch Hitch Ball
Sounds like the coupler is designed for a 2-5/16 inch ball and because of that it's not securing to the 2 inch ball of your ball mount. Other possiblity is that the latch of the coupler isn't totally latching or is broken. Most likely it's the wrong ball size as the only time I have seen this problem that has been why.
