Video Transcript for Complete Breakdown of the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a 2-5/16" hitch ball from Draw-Tite. This hitch ball installs onto a ball mount and provides a connection point for your trailer's coupler. It's made from a durable, cold-forged steel construction with corrosion resistant chrome finishing. It does come with the lock washer and the nut, so all that's included. The fine thread design provides a very tight, strong grip. The wrench flats make it easy to hold the ball in place while tightening the nut.

You can use a 2" wrench here at the flats. Again, the ball diameter is 2-5/16". Weight capacity is engraved right here on the top of the ball, 20,000 pounds. When it comes to the shank, this shank has a diameter of 1-1/4". It has a length measurement of 2-3/4" long. This is designed to fit a drawbar thickness of 3/8" to 1" thick.

The nut is a 1-7/8" nut with a torque rating of 450 foot pounds. The product's covered with a limited lifetime warranty and when installing this, you would place this through the ball hole on the drawbar. Then, on the underside of the drawbar, you place on the split lock washer followed by the nut. Then, you can just go ahead and get everything hand tight. Then, you can use a socket and wrench to get everything tightened down to the proper torque ratings as specified in the instructions. That's going to do it for today's look at the 2-5/16" hitch ball from Draw-Tite..

Ball is fine and well made as expected, but I have to cut and machine the shank length down on the lathe to shorten it so the WD load bars won’t hit the shank and cause them to pop out on a sharp turn. I learned the hard way that a few times of this and the expensive Reese WD ball mount is permanently damaged. Why does Reese/Draw-Tite not have a ball with correct shank length to work correctly with the WD head?

George, I have not heard of needing to cut the length down on the ball with Reese. I would like to reach out to Reese and wanted to see which model of WD system that you have>

great

by:

Everything that I have ordered and received from etrailer.com has been spot on excellent, and has lasted so far great. My new tow ball is pulling 3000 lbs of trailer with 6000 lbs of Kubota and done well.

by:

First of all, the products you find at etrailer are not your garden variety, home depot kind of fair. Much higher quality and grade/weight ratings. So to be able to get hard to find items and then by orderring at least 100$ worth of stuff also get it delivered free in 4 days, is awesome. The prices are incredible too.

by:

I ordered a Curt 2-1/2" (1/2" rise - 2"drop) forged ball mount and a matching Curt 2-5/16" ball from etrailer on Monday. They arrived today (2 days later!) at the campground where I am staying.

Like all Curt products, the quality looks great. Thank you etrailer! I could have saved over $250 had I called you guys first rather than listen to "experts" at local trailer stores when they told me what rise/drop I needed. I won't make that mistake again.

Everything is working great! Again, there are a lot of people out there who sell trailertow vehicle parts at premium prices. who simply dont know what they are doing. My wife and I are desperate to begin camping this year. Thank you etrailer!

by:

I like this ball for its 20K capacity. I like to have a good margin of error on trailer balls. I also like this ball for the wrench flats compared to using a pipe wrench to hold the ball while tightening it on the hitch. The 2-¾ inch shank worked perfect for the heavy receiver hitch I installed the ball on.

Kim

Have been using the ball for a year with zero worries about failure. Great product.

by:

It is heavy and well made and will be used on a Blue Ox Sway Pro weight distribution hitch. Having the flat spots for a wrench on the base of the ball, is almost mandatory for torquing the nut to the proper spec.

Sorry for the delay responding, weve been out of town camping for the last 4 days. Im still happy with the products mentioned in the email

It is what I needed for my new hitch. I will be be installing it today on my hitch head. Waiting for my new trailer. Should be here soon.

The ball has been great. Have been very happy with it.

by:

Very good quality product and technical support. When I called, they had me give all the measurements for the trailer hitch height and other dimensions. This allowed me to purchase the correct drop for the hitch. It works perfectly and tows our 14,000lb rated trailer with ease.
I would not have know all that information, being a woman. But then again, I see plenty of men towing with the wrong hitch because the trailer is out of level.

by:

My trailer weight is approx 16,000 lb. No problems what so ever with this ball. And, the chrome finish is taking the abuse very well. Highly recommend this product.

Roger U.

Still no chrome flaking off. Seems to handle the load very well.

by:

Seems like a super heavy duty hitch ball. Per instructions, requires 450 ft-lbs on nut, wow! Good luck meeting this requirement if you don't have a 3/4" torque wrench capable of applying this much torque. The nut on my hitch ball is buried deep inside the equalizer hitch. Luckily I already had a 1-3/4" socket and the correct 3/4" drive torque wrench along with a 2 foot long pipe wrench to hold the flats on the ball side. Things to think about before purchasing this hitch ball.

by:

Has held up perfectly. Great product

by:

This is the strongest part of our Reese sway bar installation kit. the sway bars and the drop hitch are both limited to fifteen hundred pounds tongue weight and 15000 pounds trailer weight.

by:

As always when ordering from e-trailer my tow ready ball and hitch arrived promptly. Parts are perfect rugged strong no issues and I pull 13,000 enclosed trailer. I would recommend this item for purchase.

by:

This 2 5/16" ball is great! It looks very strong and that chrome sure does shine!!

This 2-5/16 ball is still fine, chrome is still intact. A very strong trailer ball!

by:

This is a beefy ball hitch, the nut of of which will require a 'thin wall' socket to allow clearance between the adjacent structure of the #FA94-00-0600 weight distribution hitch when tightening.

by:

Excellent product, just what the doctor ordered!

by:

Purchased a weight distribution kit and it was shipped and delivered within a couple days. Customer Service was excellent and their products are of good quality. I really like their website as they carry a lot of useful products. I have and will continue to recommend etrailer.

by:

Not a lot to say about a hitch ball. This one is especially nice because the ball end has squared off sides for wrench tightening. So many of these are round balls mounted on a round stem. First thing you do is scratch them up with a giant channel lock. Not this one!

by:

The folks at etrailer.com were very helpful and professional in assisting me obtain an alternative to my initial order which was on back order until December due to the Covid-19 virus. I initially ordered the Curt Rebellion XD Shock-Absorbing Adjustable Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 6-1/4" Drop - 15K with a 2" and a 2 5/16" stainless steel balls. Due to their diligence I was able to learn of the backorder status immediately. Consequently, they were able to provide a work around (chrome balls as opposed to stainless steel). While their dedication facilitated on-time delivery. I not only recommend them, but I will definitely shop with them again.

by:

I needed a 2 1/2" drop hitch for my new truck. I got on etrailer, found exactly what I needed. They explained how to measure for the correct drop, which made it easy. Once I located the hitch, I found the correct ball, and a bolt-lock, and was done. It all shipped with free shipping, arrived in one box a few days later. Everything was there, and it was all correct. This was my 3rd time ordering from etrailer. All 3 experiences have been great. Will definitely order from etrailer again. Thanks etrailer

by:

I ordered the Blue OX BXW1500. Installation was easy, I will be testing it next week for the first time. etrailer's customer service was wonderful. I worked with Sarah, she was a wonderful help. After ordering the hitch, I found it for a lower price. etrailer refunded the difference plus another 10% of the difference with no questions asked. I highly recommend etrailer for all your camping needs.

Thanks
Jason

Best thing about e-trailer is fast delivery. 3 days and I got it! They have a great selection and I keep coming back.

All high quality stuff working well for me, thanks

by:

Rated 20,000 lbs is awesome. The whole idea is knowing the trailer won't have a chance to end up on your front seat because the hitch ball broke during a fast stop.

by:

It's a trailer ball with a decent weight rating. Works as it should. Used it on a Curt round bar weight distribution hitch.

  • Best Weight Distribution System for a 12,000 lbs Toy Hauler
Hey Rob! Weight distribution systems are based off of tongue weight which is 10%-15% of your trailer's total weight so that would put a regular trailer between 12,900 lbs and 1,900 lbs. Since yours is a toy hauler you're not going to get close to the 15% when you're loaded up because the weight of whatever you're hauling is going to be behind your rear axle. With this in mind, I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control item # RP66075. This system has a tongue weight...

I contacted my tech contact at Curt and the distance from the hitch pin hole on the Curt # C13269 hitch to the bumper is 4-1/2". The center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the gusset on the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 80248 is 5-3/4" which means this ball mount sticks out enough to where it will not hit the bumper on your 2016 Jeep Renegade in the rise or drop position. If you are looking for a pin and clip for this ball mount, I recommend the Draw-Tite Pin and Clip # PC3. If you need...
