Thule Apex vs Thule Hitching Post Pro for Taking Bike Rack in and Out Of Hitch Frequently
Published 04/04/2020 >
Question:
Hi, I have a 2018 Highlander XLE. What are the main differences and/or pros/cons to this rack versus the Thule Hitching Post Pro? We need access to our back door daily and so would not be leaving this rack on the car when we are not biking. Which rack this type or platform style would be easiest to put on/take of the hitch?

Both the Thule Apex XT 4 part # TH9025XT and Thule Hitching Post Pro part # TH934XTR are great options to carry 4 bikes. The biggest difference between the Apex and the Hitching post pro is the locks, cradle spacing, and cradles. The Apex cradles are a bit more upgraded compared to the Hitching Post Pro but the anti-sway feature is still effective with both racks. You won't need to worry about your bikes bouncing around with either rack. The cradles of the Apex rotate around the arm to accommodate different bike frames.
The 7" spacing between the cradles also makes it easier to put the bikes on the rack and take them off without them getting tangled. The Hitching Post Pro locks would need to be purchased individually. The Hitching Post Pro does tilt away more than the Apex so you could have full access to the rear cargo area without removing the bike rack but you would need to remove the bikes each time with either rack. I have attached a video of the Hitching Post Pro on a Highlander for your reference.
I recommend the Apex to take in and out of the hitch frequently because of it's easy to use tightening knob. You won't need to worry about purchasing the hitch lock separately and taking it in and out the hitch. The integrated tightening knob of the Apex allows you to simply tighten the knob once you put the bike rack in the hitch and then lock it with the included keys. The Apex weighs about 35 lbs which is pretty standard for a hanging bike rack, I do not recommend a platform style rack because they usually average about 40-50 lbs.
