What is the Minimum Space Between Tires on a Tandem Axle Trailer
Question:
MyForst toy hauler has 225/75/15 tires and wheels with 6 inches between tires, static. I would like to put 235/85/16s on that will give me 2 1/2 inch clearance. Will that be a problem?

Expert Reply:
I checked with Dexter, manufacturer of many trailer parts, and according to them there should be at least 1 inch of space between the tires when under load. So once your trailer is loaded and ready to tow, if you have more than 1 inch of space between the tires then going to the larger size would work.
You also have to consider the additional width of the larger tire and the additional height. the new larger size will be 3.2 inches taller and 1.25 inches wider than your existing tire size. What this means is you would need more than 1.6 inches of clearance above the existing size and greater than 0.625 inches between the trailer and the inner sidewall on the existing tire size for the bigger tires and wheels to fit.

hello, I just replaced my axles and put bigger tires on so I flipped the springs on the axle. I now am running into the issue of clearance of the fenders. The trailer has equalizer on it. What would be the min distance I would want above the wheel to the fender sitting lever for it to be ok and not hit the fender when I hit a bump or roll down over a hill and the equalizers level out? thanks
