Question:
I own a 2010 Volvo XC60. I want to tow a trailer with brakes. The factory can only supply a 4 pin system. Is there any way to convert OE into a 7 pin? The OE system also includes some software. I am not sure what the software does.

If you have the factory 4-way installed on your XC60 then you can use a Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit - 10 Gauge, item # ETBC7, to complete the wiring for a 7-way connector and a brake controller. This kit includes all of the wiring, connectors, circuit breakers, and trailer connector needed for installation. I have posted instructions for installing the ETBC7 kit below.
If you do not have the OEM 4-Way wiring installed on your vehicle yet you can use the Curt Circuit Protected Powered Converter w/ SMT, item # C59496. I spoke to my contact at the manufacturer of the wiring harness to be sure and he said that there is no software needed to install the wiring on the 2010 Volvo XC60.
I would recommend the Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller, item # 90885, for your vehicle. This controller is easy to use and gets great reviews by our customers.

Hi Robert; I have a similar question on a 2010 Volvo XC 60 Brake controller install (asked by Steven above). I have an aftermarker 7PIN connector installed, and previously used the Kurt ECHO (51180?) plug N Play controller. It worked well, but I found out the hard way how east that is to steal! My Volvo dealer says that with the earlier models (like my 2010) the elctronics aren't as "sensitive" and I may be able to tap into my rear brake light to do the controller install; but they couln't confirm that. Whats your opinion on that, or other suggestions for this vehiclke and would you still recommennd the Tekonsha P2? Thanks very much! P.S. - I have the T6 turbo with AWD, if that makes any difference
