Replacement Hub and Drum for Dexter 2,800-lb Dexter Trailer Axles

Updated 10/23/2026 | Published 10/22/2026

Question:

I have Dexter 2800 lb axles on my trailer but the drums have gotten pretty rough on the inner rub surface for the arm and are starting to grab, do you have replacement drums that will fit this?

Hey Craig!

Yes, we do have replacement hub and drum assemblies for your Dexter 2,800-lb axles! These typically use a 10" diameter x 1-1/2" wide brake drum, and the Dexter # DX62KR is a likely replacement.

This hub has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and uses L44649 outer and LM67048 inner bearings. Could you confirm your wheel bolt pattern and check for a part number stamped on your existing hub? The bearing numbers would also help verify fitment.

Since the drums are starting to grab, I'd inspect the brake shoes and hardware for wear, too. If those need replacing, the Dexter Brake Assemblies # K23-472-473-00 are compatible with this drum's 1-1/2" braking surface.

I'm fairly confident this is the setup you have, but let me know what you find out on the measurements and/or part numbers just to be sure!

Alright cool, the L44649 outer and LM67048 inner bearings are the exact bearings I have used in the past to rebuild these(with a 10-42 seal and races L44610 and LM67010) The drum says Dexter, 8-288, and there's what I think is a 244 but it's a little hard to read. It looks like the brake assembly is welded to the axle so the whole assembly can't be replaced, any chance there's a rebuild kit for just the internals? I also confirmed: 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, 10" diameter x 1-1/2" wide brake drum

@CraigA Hey Craig! One thing I caught is that the # DX62KR uses a different grease seal than your original 10-42, so I wouldn't recommend it as a direct replacement now that I know that difference. However, you may not need new drums! If the braking surfaces, including where the magnet rides, aren't deeply grooved, cracked, or excessively worn, you can often reuse them and just rebuild the brakes. Similar to a car, you normally replace the brake pads several times before needing new rotors or drums. Since your brake assemblies are welded on, we have some replacement parts that may work with your existing setup: Brake Shoes # BP04-065 Brake Spring Kit # K71-362-00 Brake Magnet # AKBRKR-M10 I'd just want to verify the existing brake components before ordering, especially the magnet, since some older Dexter assemblies use different designs.
