Need Electric Trailer Brake Controller For 2020 Jayco Greyhawk/Ford E450 Motorhome

Question:

I need an electric brake controller for my 2020 Jayco Greyhawk.. but it is on a 2019 Ford 450 chassis! Does that matter? I would like it to plug into my existing wiring! I’m towing a single axle tow dolly ! Please help ! Tom A.

Hey Thomas, thanks for reaching out. Yes, we do have a brake controller that will plug into the existing wiring on your 2020 Jayco Greyhawk. Here is what I recommend:

- Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # C85MV

This is a fully proportional controller, so you can smooth trailer braking that will match the vehicle braking. The controller comes with a custom pigtail that will plug directly into the factory harness on your 2020 Jayco Greyhawk/Ford E450. Assuming your motorhome has the factory 7-way, that factory connection will already be present under the dash.

Your motorhome does have the factory 7-way, correct?

Thanks for the reply Jesse ! My motorhome does have the 7 way plug installed! I have already ordered the RED44FR controller and the 331-TPH-017 connector wire ! Thru your customer service person Rick D. I hope this will be a plug and play install ! Will this work for me?? Thanks…Tom A.

@ThomasA So the # RED44FR controller can be used on your motorhome, but the # 331-TPH-017 connector is not what you'd need for a plug and play install. The # 331-TPH-017 is for connecting a Redarc controller to a Tekonsha custom pigtail. So that would only be a plug and play install if you already have a Tekonsha custom pigtail. The Tekonsha pigtail is not part of the Ford E450 factory setup, so I'm not quite sure why that was ordered. It doesn't look like Redarc offers a custom pigtail for the Ford E450, which is the main reason I recommended that Curt controller. You can still use the # RED44FR, but you'll have to hardwire the controller. This means if your motorhome has a OEM brake control plug, it will need to be cut off. The # 331-TPH-017 plug would not be used in this case. Do you have an OEM brake controller plug under your dash?

@JesseM. I actually haven’t looked yet..but I am assuming I have one ! Would I be able to return the controller I will receive and get the controller you suggested?? Can I get a return tag for this? I haven’t actually received the controller yet ! Thanks so much for your help Jesse ! I’m doing to do this install myself.. fyi…

@TomA Yes I can get a return label sent to you. Before you send anything back I'd recommend checking just to make sure you do have the factory brake controller plug. If you do have it, we can get you a plug and play option. If you don't have it, you might as well just hang on to the Redarc. Its a great controller and since you would be hardwiring it anyways, there wouldn't be much benefit in going with a different model. Also, just so we are clear, when I say "hardwiring" it is just connecting four color coded wires with butt connectors. Easily DIYable. Since your motorhome has the factory7-way it SHOULD have a brake controller plug pre-installed but I'd definitely want you to check to be sure. Let me know what you find.
