Question:

Hello. I have a food trailer. Many times the trailer isn’t level side to side and we have to use ramps or blocks. I would like to add one of the following options: 1. two sets of airbags to the axles, one set per side it’s a dual axle trailer 3500 lb axles, so I can control each side independently. or if it exists, 2. A 4 bag system with two paths so I can control each side of the trailer independently. Under no circumstances would I drive with the bags inflated. This would just be to level out once parked on site and ready to serve food. Once finished, bags would be deflated and left in that position until the next service. My goal is to be able to lift either side of the trailer to level out while cooking. Can you link me to a system that I would use, even if I have to retrofit the brackets. I’m looking to bolt to the main frame of the trailer and then I assume the second connection would be to the round portion of the axle itself. Thank you for your time.

Hey there!

The closest option I recommend for what you're wanting to do is the Lippert Center Point by Trailair Air-Ride Suspension Upgrade # LC1565391. Rather than trying to retrofit automotive-style air bags between the frame and your 3,500 lb round axles, the Center Point is specifically designed for tandem-axle trailers and replaces the existing center equalizers in your leaf spring suspension.

It uses an air bag on each side of the trailer, so you get the adjustability of an air suspension without having to fabricate mounts directly to the axle tubes. Your two 3,500 lb axles are well within the capacity of the system.

There is one important limitation for your particular application, though. The # LC1565391 comes plumbed with the two air bags connected together through a single inflation point. Because the pressure equalizes between the two sides, you can't use the system as it comes to independently inflate the left or right side of the trailer for side-to-side leveling.

For that reason, I wouldn't want to tell you that this is a direct replacement for leveling blocks. Its intended purpose is primarily to improve the trailer's suspension and ride quality rather than function as a campsite leveling system. It does, however, give you a much better starting point than trying to fabricate air bags onto the axle tubes.

If you go with the Lippert Center Point # LC1565391, I would also consider adding the MORryde X-Factor Crossmember # MR33WR to the front and rear spring hangers. The Center Point takes the place of your center equalizer, so an X-Factor cannot be installed at that center hanger, but you can install one at each outer hanger. These crossmembers tie the two sides of the suspension together and add lateral support to the hangers and trailer frame, which would be a worthwhile upgrade on a food trailer that's regularly being loaded, unloaded, and parked on uneven surfaces.

For conveniently adjusting the Center Point air bags, you can also add the Air Lift WirelessONE Compressor System # AL25980. This gives you an onboard compressor along with a wireless remote and Bluetooth phone control, so you wouldn't need to carry a separate compressor or manually fill the bags at the trailer. Just keep in mind that the # AL25980 is a single-path compressor system, so it keeps both air bags at the same pressure; it would make adjusting the Center Point much easier, but it still would not give you independent left- and right-side leveling.

If you're interested in the # LC1565391, can you tell me the width of your leaf springs and the measurements of your current center hanger/equalizer? I can verify whether the Center Point will fit your suspension.

Installed the Lippert Center Point Suspension System over a year ago on our fifth wheel camper. Definitely made a difference in the ride.

Well like Jerry said the lippert center point probably wouldn’t be a good choice to level. It only raises my trailer maybe an inch but the ride is so much better with the lippert center point. I guess if you wanted to you could run 2 different lines and air them independently but if you need to raise it more then an inch I wouldn’t use them all I could say is get some airbags and fabricate some brackets.

@JerryB Hey Jerry I have love the center point by lippert, I have a 2022 Jayco Eagle 5th wheel and it has made such a difference. Things don’t move around inside like they used too and it feels like it floats over speed bumps. The only con I have is I wish it raised it a little more then an inch to make it a little more level to my ram.
