Question:

I have just installed a Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" C77MJ on my wifes 2024 RAV4. Thanks for recommending Beaufort Trailer in Beaufort, SC - outstanding. I have a 2" receiver on my 2025 Toyota 4Runner. I have looked at all your racks and sort of like the Benton ShiftsandGrins Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Wheel or Frame Mount B54FR. The rack would hold our Trek hybrid street bikes. Is this particular Benton a good choice? I would also need to purchase locks. Steve

Hey Steve! Glad to hear Beaufort Trailer took good care of you with the hitch install. The Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack # B54FR is a great choice for your Trek hybrid bikes. It is a nice, solid platform rack with a 55 lb per bike capacity and will work well with the new hitch on the RAV4 and the one on your 2025 4Runner. It is also a great way to save some money compared to the higher-end platform racks while maintaining the features that matter.

For locks, I recommend adding the Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock and Cable Lock # e88RV. This gives you a locking hitch pin to secure the rack along with a 10' cable lock for your bikes. They're keyed alike so you only have to keep track of one key.

Agree with everything Robin stated, and I have complete confidence that nothing will fall off when moving. There is no flexing whatsoever over any scale of bumps. The trade-off for this rigidity is the weight. The hitch approaches a 2-person lift to mount it in the receiver. A single woman will not be able to lift it.

@Glenn thanks for that feedback! It is definitely a hefty rack at 53 lbs. That said, if you check out our videos with Evangeline, she is able to handle it and get it installed by herself. She's not exactly the biggest person on our team, so it is certainly doable, although some people may be more comfortable with an extra set of hands.

I am happy with the Benton Shifts & Grins rack. I did have a problem when used on my RAV4. The bar that goes into the hitch reciever would drag on the ground when going into or out of a steep driveway or through an intersection with a deep dip. I solved it by getting a 4 inch hitch riser and anti rattle bracket.

@DougC thanks for sharing that! Ground clearance can definitely be a little tight for any bike rack depending on the vehicle, so the riser is a good solution for those steep driveways and dips. Glad to hear you're happy with the Shifts & Grins!

I am very happy with my Benton Shift & Grin. It is easy to use and the tilt down feature is great to get in the back of the vehicle without taking the bikes off. For the first few times you use it, you'll want to make sure all the wheel cradles are tight. I lost one that got loose and fell off somewhere.

The Benton Shifts&Grins bike rack is a premium rack compared to most. It is a very heavy duty high quality rack. It is a bit heavy, around 50 pounds, but sturdy beyond belief. I will say that my wife Installs and removes it by herself on her 2024 Pathfinder. The first time was awkward, but after that, she does it without thinking. It will work well on any SUV. The tilt down gives ample clearance. Note, if you have an SUV with the spare tire on the back, you will likely need a hitch extension for clearance. I have, with the help of e-Trailer, even created a method for using this on my 2026 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, that also works great. Carrying two hybrid bikes is no problemat all. You have to see one to believe how well built these racks are, and securing the bikes is a breeze… they stay firmly in place. You cannot go wrong with this one.
