Question:

We have an Equalizer hitch on our Airstream and F-250. As I age it is becoming difficult to lift the ball mount and position it to slide into the receiver. Is there a tool, like a small transmission jack that I could use to assist for ing or removing the component?

Hey Max!

I can definitely understand how the weight of the weight distribution is starting to wear you down. We don't have a transmission jack or any carriers that would bear the full weight of the ball mount from below, but the HitchGrip Carrying Tool for Weight Distribution Head Assembly with 2-5/16" Ball # 303-HG-712 will give you the relief you need when installing and removing the ball mount for a hitch like Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ64FR. It works by grabbing and gripping the mount from the ball's neck as shown in the photo below and then once lifted, the tool will distribute the weight of the ball mount and you can use it to guide the mount into your hitch receiver to prevent dropping the mount or straining yourself. While this is a great option for assisting in guiding your ball mount, I do think a small and/or portable transmission jack would be a better option to preserve your body and keep you towing for as long as possible.

I'm 70 years old. I use the Hitchgrip with the head of my Equalizer. I have an F150 so I might not need to go as high as the rig in the question but the grip helps a lot. The picture shows it going to the rig but I find it most useful when sliding the head into the receiver. It gives me better control than I ever had without it. I would say when moving the head to the truck, the grip is useful. For me it is essential when putting it in the receiver.

@JerryB We try to tow the trailer somewhere at least once a month except in the winter. I use the HitchGrip to move the head from storage in the garage to the truck, usually to where it will sit while we camp, back to the truck, and then back to the garage.

I'm 69 yrs old. I had shoulder surgery so it's very awkward to attach the ball assembly to my gmc pickup. As shown in the picture this tool holds hitch level and makes it easier to attach to the truck. It also makes it easier to carry. I am very happy that I purchased the Hitchgrip tool.

I’m 72. This tool is very helpful. It keeps your hand away from the greasy ball. I still grab the shank, and don’t carry it like the guy in the picture. It’s not anti-gravity. The hitch is still darn heavy!

@BobP Haha very true! It may make it a little easier, but by no means is it easy. Do you use it pretty often or are you just an occasional tower?

@JerryB We’ve been out over 30 days this year, with stops every 3 or so days. We tend towards leaving the Equal-I-zer hitch head in the truck receiver. So I’ve probably put the head assembly on/off 4 or 5 times this season.

I’m 74 years old and disabled this new carrier for my weight distribution hitch is awesome. I wish I had thought of the idea. It is a great product. It makes it so easy for me to remove that heavy hitch place it in the garage then pick it up and put it back on the truck whenever I need it because of the size of the hitch even though all of my trailers my boat everything has 2 5/16 ball it’s good to be able to remove it. Have you ever hit your shin on that heavy hitch anyway great product and great people in the trailer they’re very knowledgeable and if they don’t know the answer, they’ll get the answer.

During the summer RV six months from April to about mid October. I move my RV every 28 days. I moved the bass boat quite often and the Enclosed Trailer.
