Easily Install, Remove, and Carry Your Hitch Head

HitchGrip Carry

The HitchGrip is a simple tool that makes it easy to install, remove, and maneuver your weight distribution head assembly. Dealing with an oversized ball mount or heavy weight distribution head can be a real headache. These assemblies can be heavy, awkward to handle, dirty, and genuinely uncooperative. But with the HitchGrip carrying tool, you can do what is needed with your assembly as quickly, cleanly, and painlessly as possible.

The HitchGrip makes it easy to get a good grip on your head assembly. As a result, you won't drop your expensive, heavy equipment, nor will you strain your back trying to awkwardly carry it. It also allows for proper leverage so that you don't have to wiggle and shake the assembly to install or remove it. This saves time and eliminates frustration. And because you don't actually have to touch your head assembly when you use the HitchGrip, you can avoid getting grease and grime onto your hands. This allows you to go from task to task without needing to clean your hands in between.

How to Use the HitchGrip Carrying Tool

HitchGrip Usage Example

First, position the HitchGrip to the side of your hitch ball with the handle pointing toward the rear of your vehicle. Then tilt the tool downward and slide it onto the ball to engage. Make sure that the HitchGrip is centered over the ball mount or hitch head so that the weight will be evenly distributed. Then lift up on the handle of the HitchGrip so that the carbide tips grip the underside of the ball. Once the tool has a good grip on the ball, you can carry and maneuver your ball mount with ease. When you install your ball mount in your hitch receiver, you can also use the HitchGrip to easily line up the hitch pin holes.

Recommended Clearance for Drop Hitches

If your ball mount or head assembly is in the drop position, the HitchGrip may not work on your setup. In order to ensure a good grip and proper leverage, it is recommended that you have no more than 4-1/4" between the top of the hitch head and the top of your trailer hitch receiver. If there isn't enough space between the tool and the top of the hitch head you may not be able to get your hand securely around the handle.

I got this product to help me lift and carry my weight distribution hitch since I often hitch and unhitch my trailer by myself. As a woman in my 60's being able to handle the hitch without having to "wrap my arms around it" and get grease on my clothes is a really good thing!

Still liking this product even though I havent had very many chances to use it this year!

Very handy to carry the ball without having to grab the whole thing. This is really helpful for the weight distribution I have, it's heavy (see photo). The other advantage is if you need to swap out your draw bar/ball and don't feel like, this helps. Thanks to George for the updates!

Its still great! Helps my back and keeps my hands clean.

- 303-HG-712

Such a simple idea that really works. The Hitch Grip allows one to much more easily maneuver the heavy hitch head into place in the receiver of the tow vehicle. The way it is built, it can be used one-handed to lift the hitch into place (or two hands if needed) and then reversed to help position the hitch shank to line up the holes for the locking pin. With this in mind, it works best with heavy weight-distribution hitch heads such as the Equal-i-zer hitch or the Fastway E2 hitch or other similar hitches. It helps with ones like the Hensley Cub, but with the articulating joints in the Hensley hitch, it does not work quite so well for lifting as the mechanism wants to move. Still, it is helpful to lift the hitch onto the shank so it can be installed removed from the shank when it needs to be taken off for trailer maintenance. I went through several months without the Hitch Grip. I bought one but gave it to my daughter when I gave her the Equal-i-zer hitch. I ended up purchasing another one to help with the Hensley Cub. It is a big help when lifting the heavy parts. I recommend it highly.

Follow-up: My original review is still valid. It is still one of the more useful tools for dealing with heavy hitch heads.

I think this tool is a must have if you use a WDH. Not only are they heavy, but they awkward to carry. This tool eliminates all that. I had one before but it went with my old TT when I sold it. We bought a new TT so I needed one again. Again, a MUST HAVE.

- 303-HG-712

The product is built well, but depending on the size and weight of the hitch you are using it on you will still be required to use a lot of physical strength to carry heavy hitches.

- 303-HG-712

I purchased a few of these for my mechanics to have with them. I have been told that it has helped with picking up hitches and haven't had any pinched fingers.

- 303-HG-712

After 1 year of use, I'm a believer. Product works like it should, makes carrying heavy hitches effortless. Would recommend.

- 303-HG-712

This works very well. Hitch unit is still heavy but this handy tool makes it much easier to carry and install. After installing hitch in receiver I just throw it in the bed of the truck. So it’s there when I get to my camp site I can take hitch out. Also cleaner on hands and clothes.

Hitch grip is still working great. Much easier to carry.

- 303-HG-712

This is in my top 5 tools to ever purchase. This holder makes it so easy to carry that heavy hitch to the truck and use it to insert into the receiver. Absolutely the most valuable tool for my rv. This hitch weighs approximately 80 lbs, with the tool it is much easier to handle and not drop on my foot.

- 303-HG-712

This grips the ball firmly and make it much easier to carry the hitch to the vehicle!

- 303-HG-712

Works as described. Only problem, for me at least, is getting it safely inside my cargo area of the trailer, as my weight distribution head is substantially larger than most. And maybe 100 pounds. Does make it cleaner, easier to lift and insert / remove from the hitch. Etrailers Service and shipping cannot be beat, arrived 3 days earlier than quoted. Excellent!

At first, I thought that the hitch might wiggle free from the carrier and on my foot! Never happened! Easy to use, and I figured out how to easily put it back inside the cargo door of my Outdoors Rv trailer. No greasy hands, redistributes the weight for a much easier lift and carry. Excellent tool to have.

- 303-HG-712

Looks well built. Actually got this for my wife for Mother's Day so haven't used it yet. She is wanting to be able to do all tasks relating to hooking up and unhooking our 24' travel trailer. One struggle is handling the heavy hitch so thought the carrying tool would be helpful..... and yes she is getting some nice "normal" gifts also.

- 303-HG-712

The hitchgrip carrying tool should have been invented years ago it is so handy. I am 77 yrs old and have Rheumatoid arthritis. I can pick up the hitch and install it while reducing stress on my back, and also removing it as well. Well worth the money.

- 303-HG-712

First tool I ever bought from an email ad. But I trust etrailer. This tool is very clever. One handed lift of your weight distributing hitch head. No more need to squat down and lift with 2 hands…its awesome.

- 303-HG-712

It is amazing how this little ergonomic tool makes the handling of the heavy equalizer hitch so easy. This 76 year old body thanks the creator of this device. It allows you to handle the load with one hand and in a more favorable body position. I would even suggest it for the ladies that may be RVing as they would likely not need assistance. Well done. I was also pleased that, unlike so many other products today, this tool is made in the USA.

- 303-HG-712

This item is well worth the minimal investment. It certainly saves getting your back "out of whack " when engaging or disengaging a 40 lb. hitch ball assembly. Very convenient when moving the assembly from place to place in my garage or in the bed of my truck. You cannot go wrong with e-trailer. I have purchased several items from them and have always been well satisfied.

Its been working great, when I have a chance to get out and use it. The Covid virus has sort of played hob with most camping plans this year, so far.

- 303-HG-712

This was a Birthday present for my husband. He's thrilled, saves him getting on his knees hooking up our little trailers. Great invention!

Still lovin it. Makes it so easy to remove the chin barking ball when not in use!
Mary J - 05/03/2021

- 303-HG-712

After one year's of use of my Hitchgrip I'm still satisfied with it & it works as advertised. Since I'm not the biggest guy on the block this tool really reduces strain on my back.

- 303-HG-712

Really a great product. Makes hauling around the hitch a breeze, keeping all the grease off you. Well made too.

Great! Couldnt camp without it. Makes things so much easier when mounting the hitch. And, keep the grease from the ball off you.
JAMES P - 04/28/2021

- 303-HG-712

This product works just as described. I use it every time I load the hitch into the receiver or unload it. Unfortunately, it doesn't make the hitch any lighter! But it does make it easier to move around and you don't get dirt and grease all over your hands.

Fine. It still works as described. Good as new. I just wish the hitch werent so heavy!
Dalton B - 12/05/2020

- 303-HG-712

Great product for lifting heavy distribution hitch to slip on to pickup and to remove once you have set up at your campsite. When you get home once again handy to remove and place in garage. Great tool but you need to be stronger than an 89 lb. weakling to move the heavy dist. Hitch in the first place. If you hold it steady and balanced it is awesome.

I use it because it keeps me clean. The balance is good and you only need to keep it lined up when carting the heavy hitch so it doesn’t on your foot. I use it often.
Richard H - 06/11/2020

- 303-HG-712

Tried it as soon as I opened it. It made picking up my trailer hitch much easier and less messy. I can tell it will be well worth the money.

- 303-HG-712

I’m glad I bought this. It helps me avoid, to a large degree, of physically handling my large heavy hitch assembly and ball with its grease and oblong shape. It’s a little slippery to engage it initially but it’s worth it.

I like but engineering the next version to be able to grasp a greasy hitch better. I would argue the grabber needs to be WIDER.
Patrick - 04/26/2020

- 303-HG-712

Makes it easier to carry hitch assembly.

- 303-HG-712

i REALLY WANT TO LIKE THE HITCH GRIP, however as I said when I called you about it ,it dosen't work very well with a drop down hitch. Because you would not let me return it I've made do with it as is. It would be nice if you made one for a drop down hitch as so many of us with newer SUVs have to us drop down hitches
