Easily Install, Remove, and Carry Your Hitch Head

HitchGrip Carry

The HitchGrip is a simple tool that makes it easy to install, remove, and maneuver your weight distribution head assembly. Dealing with an oversized ball mount or heavy weight distribution head can be a real headache. These assemblies can be heavy, awkward to handle, dirty, and genuinely uncooperative. But with the HitchGrip carrying tool, you can do what is needed with your assembly as quickly, cleanly, and painlessly as possible.

The HitchGrip makes it easy to get a good grip on your head assembly. As a result, you won't drop your expensive, heavy equipment, nor will you strain your back trying to awkwardly carry it. It also allows for proper leverage so that you don't have to wiggle and shake the assembly to install or remove it. This saves time and eliminates frustration. And because you don't actually have to touch your head assembly when you use the HitchGrip, you can avoid getting grease and grime onto your hands. This allows you to go from task to task without needing to clean your hands in between.

How to Use the HitchGrip Carrying Tool

HitchGrip Usage Example

First, position the HitchGrip to the side of your hitch ball with the handle pointing toward the rear of your vehicle. Then tilt the tool downward and slide it onto the ball to engage. Make sure that the HitchGrip is centered over the ball mount or hitch head so that the weight will be evenly distributed. Then lift up on the handle of the HitchGrip so that the carbide tips grip the underside of the ball. Once the tool has a good grip on the ball, you can carry and maneuver your ball mount with ease. When you install your ball mount in your hitch receiver, you can also use the HitchGrip to easily line up the hitch pin holes.

Recommended Clearance for Drop Hitches

If your ball mount or head assembly is in the drop position, the HitchGrip may not work on your setup. In order to ensure a good grip and proper leverage, it is recommended that you have no more than 4-1/4" between the top of the hitch head and the top of your trailer hitch receiver. If there isn't enough space between the tool and the top of the hitch head you may not be able to get your hand securely around the handle.

When I first saw this from an etrailer.com email blast, I couldn't figure it out until I clicked the link and read more about it. When I received the HitchGrip yesterday, I showed it to my wife and now even she feels comfortable picking up the heavy hitch... this is a great new product that I will definitely promote to my many RV trailer friends!

by:

Hitchgrip carrying tool works perfectly on my heavy hitch for my F-250....I couldn't ne happier !

Comments

I purchased a few of these for my mechanics to have with them. I have been told that it has helped with picking up hitches and haven't had any pinched fingers.

Comments
Still being used by my mechanics.
Douglas - 07/26/2022

by:

It does what is claimed. It makes picking up and carrying the hitch head easier (though still heavy) and it keeps the ball grease at bay. Glad I got it.

by:

Worked as described. Definitely easier than lifting the heavy hitch by the ball.

Comments
Still working great, definitely saves having to grab it by hand.
Keith - 11/12/2022

by:

First tool I ever bought from an email ad. But I trust etrailer. This tool is very clever. One handed lift of your weight distributing hitch head. No more need to squat down and lift with 2 hands…its awesome.

Comments
Awesome, I use this tool every time I need to install or remove the weight distribution hitch. Your hands stay clean and it easy to use one handed.
Stephen - 05/09/2022

by:

It is amazing how this little ergonomic tool makes the handling of the heavy equalizer hitch so easy. This 76 year old body thanks the creator of this device. It allows you to handle the load with one hand and in a more favorable body position. I would even suggest it for the ladies that may be RVing as they would likely not need assistance. Well done. I was also pleased that, unlike so many other products today, this tool is made in the USA.

Comments
Still a big help

by:

This tool makes it so easy to carry and mount my WD hitch, with only one hand! Buy it, you won't regret it!

by:

It slips on the ball when I try to lift my hitch head. The ball hitch is on a 2.5 inch receiver with heavy duty ball.

Comments
This tool is really handy, but you will have to maneuver it slowly because if you go at it too quickly, it can slip. Please view this video at the 57 second mark to see how carefully she is moving with the tool.

Works great; makes it safe to carry your hitch.

by:

Works as advertised. Makes it much easier to carry the head assembly to the vehicle and insert into the hitch receiver.

by:

I accdently bought 2 of the hitch grip, I belive his name is james any way he was great at handling the problem to get one of them sent back. great service and the hitchgrip works like a charm. Keep up the great work.

by:

Nice tool for lifting/carrying the heavy weight distribution hitch. A little difficult getting it attached to the Blue Ox hitch (the ball is short/stubby).

by:

This product is awesome! I am 6'7 350lbs with little body fat so typically the weight of the hitch gives me no issues. But this tool keeps my hands out of the grease, love it!

by:

Very handy to carry the ball without having to grab the whole thing. This is really helpful for the weight distribution I have, it's heavy (see photo). The other advantage is if you need to swap out your draw bar/ball and don't feel like, this helps. Thanks to George for the updates!

Comments
Its still great! Helps my back and keeps my hands clean.
Dave S - 04/14/2019

by:

Makes grabbing your greasy balls easy and clean! I added a hitch stop ring so the hitch stops at the right spot to insert the hitch pin every time. Easier to carry my weight distribution hitch with this tool also.

by:

This tool really helps with moving the heavy & awkward receiver around . It also helps from getting the ball lubricant on my hands . I would definitely recommend this product .

by:

Tool is very helpful to distribute the weights of the rv hitch that I have.
Very nice tool.

by:

I highly recommend the Hitch Grip. It has saved my back when lifing my hitch. Easy to carry a hitch and it won't come loose while carrying it.

by:

An excellent tool, solid construction, light weight and nothing cheap ( meaning poor quality) about it. It allows inserting and removing the heavy draw bar with one hand if you can manage the weight, or two hands if not. You never need to touch the draw bar which always seems greasy. Reasonably priced, I bought two and gave one to a fellow camper.

by:

With a bad back it's much easier to lift with one hand and applying the lift pressure to my good side!
Already sold a couple more for you to RV buddies!
Thanks for the great product!

by:

This is in my top 5 tools to ever purchase. This holder makes it so easy to carry that heavy hitch to the truck and use it to insert into the receiver. Absolutely the most valuable tool for my rv. This hitch weighs approximately 80 lbs, with the tool it is much easier to handle and not drop on my foot.

by:

This will not work on my hitch because the drop is too tall. My fault for not considering this. I wish they made one of these that was taller to clear the longer drops.

Comments
The handle will interfere with the ball mount if the of the hitch head to the top of the receiver opening is more than 4 and a quarter inches.
-- Etrailer Expert Sierra K - 05/26/2022

by:

The hitchgrip makes it easy to exchange my hitches. Works as described.

This product is the BOMB. It makes lifting, installing and uninstalling the Weight Distribution Head Assembly a breeze.

  • Carrier Tool that Grabs the Hitch Ball
It sounds like you're referring to the HitchGrip Carrying Tool which is part # 303-HG-712. It's techincally designed for carrying a heavy weight distribution head but could be used for any ball mount. It's a reasonably new product and so far people love it. The only catch is that it only works with a 2-5/16 inch ball. I've linked a video review for you.

  • HitchGrip Compatibility With Adjustable Ball Mount With 2-5/8 Inches Between Ball And Drop Shank
I have some photos attached to help you with the dimensions of the HitchGrip # 303-HG-712.
