Recommended Hitch Extender to Clear a Spare Tire on a Thor Tellaro Motorhome

Updated 07/13/2026 | Published 06/22/2026

Question:

My rear doors for my Thor Tellaro hit the spare tire and trailer coupler on my shorelander trailer. Do I need a hitch extender or a swing away attachement, Which is the best and easiest fix. The trailer and kayak I pull with it isnt that heavy for tongue weight

Hey David. You definitely need a hitch extender not a swing away. Those aren't for towing, only accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers.

To clear the spare tire on your Thor Tellaro, I have a couple of options depending on how long of an extension you need and how heavy your trailer is.

I recommend the Curt Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers item # C76DR if an 8" extension will get you clear of the spare tire and your trailer weighs up to 3,500 lbs. It has a 350 lbs tongue weight capacity as well. The Curt item # C45795 has the same capacities but will extend out 14" from the hitch pin hole on your Thor's hitch.

If your trailer's over 3,500 lbs, I recommend the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender item # GY89SR. This one will also give you a 14" extension. It's going to be rated for trailer's weighing up to 10,000 lbs and a 500 lbs tongue weight.

Please note that using any hitch extender is going to reduce your Thor Tellaro's hitch's capacities by 50%.

How far out does the outside edge of your spare tire sit from your Tellaro's hitch pin hole and how heavy is your Shorelander trailer?

Trailer weighs 250# and kayak 150#. Looks like I need 16 Inches from center of hitch pin to get door to clear. My current hitch sits 9 inches from center of pin to center of ball. An 8 inch extension would do it?
