Question:

Hi, I need to convert my 2 inch stinger hitch for my thule 916 XTR to fit my 1 1/4 Honda hitch.. What is the best part for this - hoping to reduce extension and have rack as close to my car as possible .

Hey Michael,

Since your Honda has a 1-1/4" hitch you'll need an adapter like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter # C45785. This adapter has the shortest hitch pin hole to hitch pin hole measurement at 6" so it'd be the best option to keep the rack closer to vehicle, but it does come with some drawbacks. Hitch adapters like this would reduce the overall capacity of the trailer hitch by 50%, which typically makes a low capacity 1-1/4" trailer hitch almost unusable. You'll also want to verify that your rack is compatible with hitch adapters, for some racks this voids the manufacturers warranty and can cause wear and tear.

Honestly the best option here would be to replace your trailer hitch with one that has a 2" receiver tube so you can avoid using an adapter and would be able to sit the bike rack closer to the vehicle. If you do have a 2025 Honda CR-V like what's listed then you can switch to the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98848. If you have something else then let me know and I can find the correct fit.

The Honda can only accept an 1 1/4" bike mount on the car hitch. That is why I need to either weld a 1 1/4 stinger to the 2" receiver adapter and make the length as close as possible to the bumper. Do you have a Thule arm that I can switch out the existing stinger with a new 1 1/4 " one?

@MichaelW The replacement shanks for the older model 916XTR T2 bike rack have been discontinued for some time so you'd likely have a hard time finding the replacement. You can try looking around for part number 7533709, otherwise you're looking at some fabrication work to make an adapter that will accomplish what you're wanting to do.
