Is Torque Wrench Required For Installation Of etrailer Hitch On 2026 Kia Sportage

Question:
If I install myself, how critical is the torque wrench? I don’t own and renting one seems like a hassle. Thanks.

Hey Peter! The torque wrench isn't something you want to skip when installing the etrailer # e38KR on your 2026 Kia Sportage. The mounting hardware needs to be tightened to the specific torque values listed in the installation instructions, and those values are engineered to keep the hitch securely attached to your vehicle.
If the bolts are under-torqued, they can loosen over time. If they're over-torqued, you risk damaging the hardware and potentially weakening the connection. Either situation could affect the hitch's performance and safety.

I definitely would not skip torquing the bolts. If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, a basic wrench isn't that expensive. It's definitely worth the peace of mind.

I have a cheap torque wrench that I bought at harbor freight. I had my son match it up to an expensive Matco or was it a snap on. It was 2ft lbs off. So I know to set it for the 2ft lb difference. I only use it 1 or 2 times a year. I think I paid only $25 years ago Good luck btw on the 25 Tucson the receiver works great. I just use it for a bike rack.

Peter, I installed the hitch on my 2022 Tucson, no problem. Then I took it to my local auto repair place (one I frequent) and, went out to my car in the parking area and tightened the bolt to spec. It took them about 5 minutes max and they didn't charge me a thing. It IS important, but easy to accomplish. Good luck.
