Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring Harness for a 2006 Dodge Ram w/a Factory 4-Way

Updated 06/11/2026 | Published 06/08/2026

Question:

2006 Dodge ram 1500 Big Horn Looking at buying the Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - C43GV. The pickup has a flat 4 at the back factory installed. My understanding I would need the ETBC7 adapter to hook up the controller to the to the plug under the dash, then an adapter from the flat 4pin to a 7 pin. That would run my brake lights and turn signals not my brakes on the trailer. This is where I need to know if I understand correctly, does the black wire from the 7 pin go to the battery and the blue wire goes to the brakes? 1. Is there a video the shows how to install on a dodge ram 2, would it be possible to get a list of the hardware I could get from your company?

Hey Randy thanks for the information! Here are the parts you'll need to add a brake controller to your 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with a factory 4-Way connector:

Brake Controller and Custom Fit Wiring Harness - Curt TriFlex NEXT item # C43GV

7-Way Connector - Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7

The Curt TriFlex NEXT item # C43GV comes with a custom fit harness that will plug directly into a blue connector located to the left of the intermediate shaft on the steering column. I attached a picture below so you can verify this connector is present.

The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7 is going to plug directly into your factory 4-way connector. This will provide the lighting signals for the 7-way. The blue brake controller wire will need to be ran to the back of the brake controller plug in the picture below. I'm not sure if those factory wires are color coded so you'll want to ensure the slot you splice into is 2nd from the right as you're looking at the plug with the clips on the bottom. I attached another picture below of the item # C43GV adapter. This kit comes with all the necessary wiring and circuit breakers needed to complete the installation.

The black wire on the Universal Installation Kit item # ETBC7 will indeed be ran to your Ram's battery. The white wire will need to be grounded near the 7-way connector. The yellow wire will need to be spliced into the reverse circuit of your tail light harness.

I do not have any installation videos for these parts on your generation Ram truck. I did attach a wiring diagram for the item # ETBC7.

What kind of trailer are you pulling?

The trailer is a 1976 kustom with duel axle and a 7 pin connector.

@RandyW It’s been a couple of years or longer since I installed mine. But I think you’re correct. I’m hoping someone else will verify that I’m right. But it’s a very good brake controller. You’ll be happy once you got it all up and going. ??

@RandyW That's definitely not something you see everyday.
