What is the Best Surge Brake Actuator to Replace My Old Atwood Brake Actuator AT82543?

Updated 06/08/2026 | Published 05/29/2026

Question:

Dear Sir or Madam, I have 2007 Prince-craft Ventura 190 deck-boat. I’m looking for a heavy duty drum brake surge brake coupler with a backup lockout. My old Atwood coupler is bolt on Atwood Brake Actuator AT82543 6000lbs and 900lbs tongue weight. I have been looking at your Dexter DX7.5 -N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - 2 Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs as a possible replacement but i need backup brake lockout for backing up. I would also like the bolt mounting hardware as well. Can you advise/help me with a reliable and solid replacement for my old coupler?

Hello Dennie,

Thanks for writing in!

The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 would certainly be a great replacement for your Atwood actuator. Its main advantage is the Drop-N-Go coupler design, which automatically latches onto the hitch ball when lowered into place. However, you still need to lower the coupler onto the ball just as you would with a traditional coupler, so the difference is more about latch operation than a completely different hookup process.

If it were my trailer, I would go with the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR and save the extra money. We've found the Demco to be a very reliable replacement for older Atwood actuators like your AT82543, and it provides the same dependable surge braking performance without the added cost of the Drop-N-Go coupler design.

Since you're looking for a backup lockout, either actuator will require the Reverse Lockout Solenoid # T4748800. The solenoid installs in the hydraulic line at the actuator and is wired to the reverse light circuit from the tow vehicle. When the vehicle is shifted into reverse, the solenoid blocks hydraulic pressure from reaching the brakes, allowing you to back up without the surge brakes activating.

How often do you get out on the water? I actually had to replace the surge brake actuator on my Ranger about two months ago. I was fishing a tournament at Mark Twain Lake here in Missouri this past Sunday and ended up finishing 11th out of 36 boats. As if that wasn't bad enough, I got attacked by buffalo gnats for the first time. Those little things are relentless! Do you have buffalo gnats where you're located?

I put this on a trailer I rebuilt for my 23 foot fishing boat that was converted to an outboard. Boat and trailer weight are about 6,000lbs. This actuator works great, I also installed new brakes and hydraulic lines at the same time.
