Concerns Over Installation of Hitch on 2025 BMW X5 With Driver Assistance Pro Package

Updated 05/16/2026 | Published 05/15/2026

Question:

I am considering adding a trailer hitch to a 2025 BMW X5 that has the Driver assistance PRO package. Are there any issues with doing this other than getting warnings when putting the car in reverse when the trailer is hooked up? I understand some shops don’t want to add a hitch to this vehicle and I want to understand the reason. Please advise if there are any additional concerns? Thanks, Rik

Hey Rik! The main issue with the Driver Assistance Pro package is typically just the rear parking sensors picking up the hitch or anything installed in it. We really do not see the Curt Hitch # C85VV itself causing problems with the driver assist systems when installed properly.

Honestly, the Oris # TS86VR is probably the best option here since the receiver removes completely when not in use. This maintains the factory look and there is nothing there for the sensors to see unless you're actually towing or carrying accessories. When you're using the hitch you can just disable the rear alerts if needed.

Most shops that hesitate on these are more concerned about removing the rear bumper around all the sensors and radar equipment than the hitch itself causing an issue. They're probably unfamiliar with the installation on your X5, and worried about what happens if they damage those sensors or get something out of alignment during installation.

What will you be using the hitch for?

Hi Robin, Thanks for getting back to me. I installed one of your hitches on my 2016 BMW 328 GT with no problems other than disabling the alarm when backing up and was hopeful this would be the only issue with a new X5. Thanks for confirming this. I have a 22’ Grady White boat that weighs 5,500 lbs so need a bigger vehicle to haul it. Thanks again, Rik J

@RikJ yeah disabling that alarm really is the only potential pain point from a consumer perspective, and you're already used to that. I know our own installers have commented on how difficult BMW and Mercedes can be sometimes for installations, especially newer models with more sensors. I'm guessing the guys you talked to just don't want to bother with that.
