Best Stealth Hitch And Towing Kit For 2025 BMW X5 With M Sport Package

Updated 02/11/2026 | Published 06/30/2025

Question:

Good afternoon, I am debating on doing the installation myself or using a certified installer for Stealth Hitch SH22MR on my 2025 X5 MSport. I am being advised that there is no code reprogramming required, but the wiring needs to be run to the front of the vehicle, rather than the control module at the passenger rear per instructions. Can you confirm this is accurate? I appreciate your consideration,

Hello Douglas, thanks for reaching out. The correct Stealth Hitch for the 2025 BMW X5 with the M Sport package is part # SH89VR. They for trailer towing you will also need the # SH52TR towing kit.

The wiring kit for the 2025 model should be a passive harness meaning no programing is needed, but you do have to run a wire to the vehicle battery to power the module. You do need to wire directly to the battery. Using an alternative power source is not recommended.

What kind of trailer are you planning on towing? Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey Douglas, did you decide to install the Stealth Hitch yourself or go with a certified installer? I'm curious to know how it went, as your experience could be really helpful for others considering a similar setup.

@JesseM I have a 2026 X5. If putting this hitch and wiring harness on, do I need to get the BMW coded if I use it for pulling a trailer? Or will the car play nice with just the harness on?

@DavidA Hey David, thanks for reaching out! The wiring kit that comes with the # SH22MR kit is a passive harness and is not connected to the vehicles computer, so no dealer programming required. You might need to disable backup sensors if you have them but that can be done in the vehicle settings. Aside from that, it'll play nice.
