Suspension Enhancement and Sway Bar Recommendation for 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 with Camper

Updated 05/10/2026 | Published 05/02/2026

Question:

I have a 2019 Chevy 2500 Duramax Crewcab 4x4. I want to haul a WolfCreek 840 camper which is approx 2000lbs dry. Can you recommend appropriate suspension upgrades e.g. sway bard and springs/airbags?

Hey Graeme, for your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 Duramax the suspension enhancement I would recommend is the Roadactive kit part # RAS3611-CHD which will give you all of the support you are looking for but also improves handling and ride quality so it will work great with your WolfCreek 840 camper.

Then for a rear sway bar the Hellwig part # HE56FR would be the correct fit and would also improve handling quite a bit as well. Have you carried a camper in your truck bed before?

Did you mean to say 20,000 pound camper?

@JasonC Regardless I install the system on my 2021 Silverado 2500 6.6 gas and it made a world of difference towing my 12,000 pound fifth wheels. It rebounds quicker from the chucking going over bridges and hit bumps on the road! I strongly recommend it! Very easy to install!

@JasonC the WolfCreek 840 is a truck bed camper that does weigh around 2,000 lb.

I had the Road Active system on my 2022 Chevy 2500 to help with a 10k lb pull camper, it helped with the sway and squat. That should work very well with a bed camper of 2k lbs with squat and sway that did not affect the ride while the truck was empty. I can recommend it.

Graeme, Speaking as someone who drives a 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500HD gasser who pulls an 11k lb dry Jayco 5'r I can give you some solid advice having tried several suspension aids to keep my axle load level. When I purchased my camper I had just the factory springs and overloads and my suspension would bottom out on bumps. I also got quite a bit of "Chucking", that back and forth feeling trying to accelerate with a large load. The first product I tried from Etrailer were Summo Springs. They helped keep my truck more level but made the ride very bouncy under load. Then I tried the heavy duty RAS that you are looking at. I found it worked pretty good, definately smoothed out the ride with or without a load. But I found it would also bottom out on bumps onto the Summo Springs I left in as overloads. I finally decided to purchase Firestone airbags from Etrailer and that has been my best success story for my situation. My truck stays level when under load and I can lower the air pressure when I'm not towing. I only with there was room for both the RAS and the air bags but there isn't. For your 20k lb camper I'd highly recommend air bags or upgrade to 3500 springs. Good luck!

Ours have been installed but have not towed our fifth wheel which is about 15,000 lbs fully loaded. We have a 2024 GMC Sierra crew cab 4x4 short bed. I can say at this point just driving it not under tow you know they're installed. When you hit a bump you just bump, no continued bouncing. Well, be towing for the first time this season in a couple weeks and I'm sure these are going to make a huge difference.

I have a 2013 ford f150 stx and I was looking to put air bags on my truck to haul car trailers and dump trailers. My thought was this would be better because when I wasn’t hauling I could let the air out and be back to normal. I had some extenuating circumstances however because my truck is also a 5th wheel hauler and where I was going to put the bags the hardware for th 5th wheel occupied. I talked to an etrailer rep and he told me this RAS system would be better and I have to admit at first I thought I was being upsold but now that I’ve had them on I have to say I’m extremely happy I went this way. The performance is there all the time and I don’t have to think about it. My brother put on air bags and has had leaks(not etrailer by the way), I was disappointed that they did not send me the offset bump stops with the system but hopefully I will never need them. By the way the way the way the system works is it only uses the system springs first then it goes to my springs. That’s how you don’t have to ride around like your on a hay wagon . Love em!
