Will Utopia Pop-Up Drain Fit a Smaller Sink Opening?

Updated 04/28/2026 | Published 04/27/2026

Question:

What size of drain opening in the sink does this fit? My sink drain opening seems to be smaller than the standard 1 1/2. Thanks

Mike, great question!

This drain part # UT69MR is designed for a standard setup with a 1-1/4 inch connection, which typically installs into a sink drain opening around 1-1/2 inches to about 1-3/4 inches wide. The diagram Utopia sent confirms that the drain has a 1-1/4 thread size and the 1-1/4 inch tailpiece diameter, so it’s meant for that common bathroom sink range rather than anything smaller. Trying to install it in a smaller hole would prevent it from seating properly and sealing, which can lead to leaks.

The reason sizing matters so much here is that these drains rely on a snug fit at the top flange and gasket to create a watertight seal. When the opening is too small, the drain body won’t sit flush, and that seal can’t do its job, which is where you start to see water getting where it shouldn’t.

The best next step is to measure your sink opening straight across from edge to edge at the widest point. If it comes in under about 1-1/2 inches, you’ll want to look at a smaller, specialty drain made for compact or non-standard sinks. If you can share that measurement or even a quick photo, I can help you find the right option.

What type of sink are you working with, and does it look like a standard trailer bathroom setup or something more compact? I am happy to help.
