Hi Duane, great question.

Yes, this carrier # FHG57ZR can be mounted on top of the frame as long as your frame falls within the size limits of up to 3 inches wide and 5 inches tall. The frame would also need to be square not round. It uses a clamp-on style bracket, so as long as it can fully grab the frame and tighten down properly, it will hold securely. The angled design also helps keep the spare up and out of the way, which is nice for clearance and access.

The main thing to keep in mind is making sure you have enough flat surface on top of the frame for the bracket to sit evenly, and that the tire won’t interfere with anything nearby once it’s mounted. As long as those check out, it should be a solid setup and stay put without shifting around.

What do you typically haul, and where are you hoping to mount the spare so it stays out of your way?

I plan to mount the spare carrier on the top of the trailer tongue. On my Malone Xtralight trailer (kayak trailer), the tongue is 2" wide and 3" tall, so it should fit as long as I cut the bottom brackets to the appropriate size (which isn't a problem). I've upsized from the original tires to 205/65-10's and the mount will be used for the larger tire.

@DuaneR Mounting it on top of the tongue is a great spot for keeping it accessible and out of the way, That will work well on the Malone Lite trailer. Sounds like you’ve got a well thought out setup coming together. What kind of kayaks are you hauling on that trailer?

An Old Town Vapor 12XT and a Sun Dolphin Excursion 10'. Both are modified (multiple rod holders, camera booms, fish finders, etc.). I've also added a storage bin and a cargo rack to the trailer. It really works well for my needs. Is there any way to post a photo?

@DuaneR That sounds like an awesome setup, those mods really make a difference when you’re out on the water. I wish we could see it in action, that’d be a great setup to check out! If you do happen to snap a photo, feel free to send it over to [email protected] but it won't let me add it here. It sounds like you spend a good amount of time fishing. what kind of fish are you usually going after?
