Installing MORryde Motorized Cord Storage Reel

Updated 03/30/2026 | Published 03/27/2026

Question:

How do you connect this to a regular 110 outlet in the rv storage. Also what would I need. I tried and it keeps tripping at the unit. What am I doing wrong. TIA

Hi Brian; the MORryde Motorized Cord Storage Reel # MR66AR actually runs on 12V DC power, so it can’t be plugged into a standard 110V AC outlet. If you tried wiring it into a 110V outlet that would definitely explain the problem. It is not compatible with that type of power, which is why it's not working correctly and likely tripping.

What you’ll want instead is a 12V power source, like connecting it directly to your RV’s battery. If you tie into another 12V circuit, make sure it can handle the additional 10A power draw from the reel.

Can you tell me how you currently have it wired up? That will help pinpoint exactly what’s happening.

I’m try to install it currently. I had it connected to the battery in my last rv and purchased a new one that longer and I want the reel towards the back of the rv. Is there another way other than running it to the battery?

@BrianR yes, that is what I meant by another 12V circuit. If you have a nearby 12V power source (like lights for example) you can tap into that instead of running all the way back to the battery. You still need to make sure the circuit can handle the additional 10A draw from the reel and that it’s properly fused. Some circuits may already be close to their limit depending on what else is connected. If you’re not sure what’s on that circuit I would play it safe and run a dedicated line from the battery.

@BrianR I'm not 100% sure of what you purchased...after reading your comments. The reel is an empty electric spool that you use you roll up the cord that's used to connect the rig to shore power. The reel needs a 12 volt source to power it. It has its own switch. You can probably find a 12 volt source somewhere close by. I connected mine to a light in a compartment, and mounted it on the ceiling.

You could install a 120v to 12v transformer to run the cord reel. Just make sure the transformer is properly sized

@Rick when you say properly sized, what do I need to look for or what should it be?

@BrianR a standard transformer won’t work here. Transformers only step voltage up or down, so they would output 12V AC, not 12V DC, and this requires 12V DC. To run it from a 120V outlet you would still have to add in an additional converter.

@RobinH Sorry wrong word. Converter is correct and they do make them small enough to handle this load. easily found on Amazon or Grainger.
