Rear Spare Carrier Recommendation for 2026 Airstream Interstate 19GT

Updated 03/24/2026 | Published 03/19/2026

Question:

I am considering buying a 2026 Airstream Interstate 19GT. The problem is it does not have a spare tire ability. It has a 5000 lb 2 tow hitch. So do you know of a spare tire carrier for a tow hitch that folds the tire down to a horizontal position? The chassis is a Mercedes Sprinter 2500. So I need to be able to open the rear doors. Thanks - Jerry

Hey Jerald, we have the Roadmaster Spare Tire Mount part # RM-195125 which folds down to the side to allow for access to the rear cargo area of the vehicle like your Sprinter. It will allow the carrier to fold all the way down to point tire will touch the ground. I attached a picture of a customer of ours who has this installed on their similar Sprinter to yours. With the folded to the side your rear doors would be able to open. How often do you open both of the rear doors of your camper?

I do not access the rear that often. When I do, I access the right rear cargo door. I did not locate the picture of the customer Sprinter setup you referenced. Does Roadmaster make that mount so it opens to the left side rather than the right side?

@Jerald The spare mount actually can pivot to either side if that's what you're asking.

@Jerald Hi Jerald. I mounted this unit to our fifth wheel last summer. It is a heavy duty unit that lowers to the ground on either side you select. Very well built and has been rock solid. Highly recommend and I am picky. I hope this helps.

We have the Road-master Spare Tire rack and it will fold/swivel down to either the right or the left all the way till the tire touches the ground. Touching the ground is of course provided the rear of your vehicle isn't to high off the ground - we've not had that issue yet - come close once or twice do to the contours of our camp site. We don't have your rig, but we have it on the back bumper of our 5th wheel. We like it as it is easier than crawling under the rig to get the spare down.

Have the Roadmaster tire mount set up on our 2024 Honda crv. The mount drops either to the right or left easily. Even with the full sized spare there is enough room for the rear hatch to open. We only have it on for long trips. With the full sized spare it’s a bit heavy, but is manageable by one person. The cheater bar rattles so we don’t leave it in, and rarely use it anyway. The spare can be lowered either way easily enough without it. Have used it for multiple trips across the western US. No troubles. Solid piece of kit.

We bought this tire carrier in 2024, we mounted it on the rear of our Georgetown motor home. It was easy to install and worked great. It is sturdy as we drove to Alaska and back with it and never had any issues. It worked great for the 15,000 mile trip. I definitely would recommend it.

Very good product. Makes it alot easier to replace spare for older people.
