E-Bike Rack Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-5

Updated 03/06/2026 | Published 03/01/2026

Question:

Love this rack. However, I am purchasing an e-bike that weighs 65 lbs. Do you have similar type that would accommodate an e-bike? I do not have a hitch on my 2016 Mazda CX-5

Hey Linda, because of how heavy e-bikes are there aren't any trunk mounted e-bike racks available. You would have to install a hitch on your 2016 Mazda CX-5 like the part # e98902 so that you could use an e-bike rack like Hollywood Racks Destination part # HLY66ZR.

The extra weight of an e-bike would just be too much panels of a vehicle which is why they don't make any like that.

What e-bikes are you planning on getting?

Well, the bike I was planning to get was dependant on your answer here. Since I do not have a hitch and can not afford to install one I may have to opt for a foldable bike.

@LindaC Makes sense! Yeah everything related to e-bikes tends to cost a bit more haha.

@LindaC, I purchased the Hollywood rack and put 2 ebikes on it. I don't recall the weight, but I am pretty sure they were around 65# and 70#, respectively. The rack is great, holding both bikes with no issue, and the ramp makes loading and unloading a breeze. I use it both on our Subaru Outback and on my GMC Sierra truck. The truck is much steeper an incline because the hitch is higher, but it's still doable with the ebike's feature of 'walking' it up the ramp. I can do it, but I usually ask someone to help me steady it when going up the ramp. Hope this helps!

@LindaC Linda, I have 2 e-bikes. Revi Cheetah - weighs 75 lbs and a Ruch City - 60 lbs. A trailer hitch is required to use my rack due to the weight. I also use an 8 ft trailer at times that also requires a trailer hitch.

The answers are correct. You will need a hitch on your vehicle. The rack is great and has a handy ramp to assist loading and unloading the bike.

I have this hitch for 2022 Honda Ridgeline and I have 2 Ebikes of 65 and 55 lbs. Works great as first time user. Easy and solid

Hey Linda, If you can afford it you should get that hitch installed. It really makes life much easier to have a hitch mounted rack. At least go to U-Haul and get an estimate.

Linda, My wife and I were in a similar situation of needing to install a hitch and use a hitch mounted rack on our 2017 Prius V. I was hesitant because I didn't know how the hitch receiver (and weight) would work on our smaller car. About 18 months ago with hesitation I moved ahead with the installation of a hitch receiver and purchased through eTrailer the Hollywood Racks Destination E Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes. And I'm glad I did. We just returned from traveling from MIchigan to Arizona and back with our 62 lb ebikes on the rack. There was absolutely no problem with clearance or weight. It's a great rack. Two of our friends also have the same rack and really like it. For us it was the solution for how to transport our ebikes wherever we desire. Bill P.
