Question:
Moving from a 6 leaf spring on a 7000 lb axle. What U bolts are needed for this 7 leaf 8000 lb spring part e89FV?
asked by: RF B
Expert Reply:
Hi FR; for U-bolts you can use the Dexter U-Bolt Kit for Mounting 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb, Round Trailer Axles # APUBR-8. This will allow you to mount the 7-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e89FV on your trailer. Keep in mind, increasing the leaf spring capacity does not increase the capacity of your trailer. You're still limited by the axle and other components.
What kind of trailer do you have?

I did the exact thing you are asking. 7000lb dexter axles and 8000lb springs. The 7000lb U-bolts work great.

Robin H. asked me to answer your question from a customers perspective based on my very limited experience. As a retired engineer, I can say Robin H. is spot on, It is of great concern when changing things around but just adding an extra leaf to your springs should be fine as long as the shackles bolt up. Just know that you are also limited by the spring mounts on your trailer and your trailer frame itself but I am assuming (yeah bad idea I know) you are going to stick to what your trailer load is rated for. As far as your specific question, the shackles you need depend on the diameter of your axle and the height and width of the 7 leaf 8000 lb spring part e89FV, and the center to center spacing of the shackle plate. Etrailer can measure and verify those dimensions. With that said, I am no expert on those measurements but I would believe the 7000# shackle U bolts will accomodate the extra leaf. There is about a 1/2" of threads above the nut which should be enough for that extra leaf, and I don't think the spring width and therefore center to center hole spacing on the plate changes. But I could be wrong, I'm no expert. All I did was buy a complete axle and shackles to replace one of the two axles on my car hauler. Best if Etrailer can grab a tape measure and measure the shackles and 7 leaf spring e89FV of which I have no experience with. Good luck.
