Is 55 Amp Charger Power Center Overkill For Camper That Has A Single 12V Lead Acid Battery?

Published 02/24/2026

Question:

I mostly camp with hookups and run one 12v lead acid battery. Is 55 amps overkill? thanks.

Hey there Melissa - if you’re running a single battery and mostly stay on shore power, the # WF46FR (40A) is usually more than enough.

The # WF86FR (55A) won’t hurt anything, but you likely won’t benefit much from the extra charging capacity unless you’re trying to recharge faster during short generator runs or planning to add more battery capacity later (such as 2 or 3 12v batteries wired in parallel to get more capacity).

If your cabinet opening can fit either one, then the decision really comes down to if you want the extra juice there or not.

Here are the rough opening requirements:
- # WF46FR: 10-3/8" Width x 4-1/8" Depth x 7" Height
- # WF86FR: 12-3/16" wide x 11" tall.

So I'd double-check your opening dimensions before deciding. A lot of times folks will need to trim slightly or add a filler panel if they aren't replacing with the same size that they removed.

Are you planning to upgrade to lithium down the road, or staying with a single lead-acid battery? And do you know the part number of the old power center you are replacing?
