Recommended Brake Controller for 2003 Ford F-250
Updated 02/23/2026 | Published 02/15/2026 >
Question:
I have a 2003 f250 I would like to install a trailer brake controller. I have the factory pigtail connection under the dash. Can you recommend a basic controller and which adapter I need? I also need a mounting plate for the plugs in the rear as they are currently zip tied up. Thanks

Hey Mike,
For your 2003 Ford F-250 I'd go with the Curt Triflex # C46SV. This controller is proportional which means it automatically matches brake intensity from the truck to the trailer, so if you lightly tap the brakes it lightly applies the brakes on the trailer, but if you slam on your brakes it sends the max braking you have set in the controller to the trailer brakes. Makes for a very comfortable ride.
This kit includes the needed harness for your truck.
I can help with a bracket you mentioned, but am not quite sure what you're looking for. Send me a picture to the email you get with this answer and I can take a look and make a recommendation.
What kind of trailer are you towing most often?

The Curt Tri-flex system works awesome. You can't go wrong using it for towing your trailer. I have a Ford F150 and pull a 30-foot RV trailer. I also use an anti-sway system. I am very happy with the way the Curt Tri-flex system works.

The Curt brake controller was installed on a 1997 Ford F350 that we use to pull a 20' trailer to deliver plants. Our loads are in the 14k pound range. I have had many controllers over the years and this controller is by far the best I have ever used. Nothing else even close.

I purchased my controller for a E450 2 years ago. It will be similar to your truck as far as the wiring goes. You may have to make your own bracket, my vehicle already had one that I modified slightly to fit. As far as operation, it works as advertised and I am very happy with it. It was exactly what I was looking for. I use it in the mountains of Colorado and it gives me a secure feeling while descending steep grades.
