Will the 2" Blue Ox Adjustable Mud Flap System w/Rock Screen Work w/a Rear Exhaust Motorhome?

Updated 02/12/2026 | Published 02/08/2026

Question:

Can these mud flaps be used with a 24 Fleetwood Frontier diesel pusher with rear exhaust? Im trying to find something to protect my TOAD and my coach does not have factory provided installation points for a traditional under the frame see Photo. I also need to know if it would interfere with the other components air line, electrical wire and safety chains that run from the coach to the TOAD.

Hey Greg. The Blue Ox Adjustable Mud Flap System w/Rock Screen item # BLU49UR can indeed be used on motorhomes with rear exhaust so long as you install the Heat Shield for Blue Ox Mud Flaps item # BLU29UR and the exhaust pipe is at least an inch back. It's going to attach to the high/low adapter in your picture. So long as you don't have the long extended chrome tailpipe and you can keep the Heat Shield for Blue Ox Mud Flaps item # BLU29UR at least an 1" away from the exhaust tip you'll be good.

There's a pretty sizable cutout in the mesh below the 2" mounting point of the Mud Flap System w/Rock Screen item # BLU49UR you'll be able to route your airlines, electrical wires, and safety chains through.

What kind of towbar and baseplate are you using? A Rock Shield like item # RM82DQ may be a better option depending on your exhaust.

Hi Jerred thanks for all the info. Unfortunately my coach has the long extended chrome exhaust pipe. I’m using a Blue Ox tow bar and base plate. Perhaps I just need to go back to something more traditional under the rear of the coach.

@Greg You're welcome! Ok, I was worried you had that exhaust pipe. The Blue Ox KarGard Protective Shield for Towed Vehicles item # BX8870 is the alternative guard you could use. This attaches to your tow bar and protects the front of your towed vehicle from debris. Please note it won't work with Blue Ox Acclaim tow bars.

@Greg I would recommend getting a bra for your TOAD; first trip with the mud flaps showed some intrusion on the car hood (fiat 500C)

I (with some help) installed mine on a Sportscoach DP with rear exhaust. I used the mounting hole that put it as far back as possible. So far I have not noticed any issues and no charring of the flap where the exhaust is located. That gave me six to eight inches of clearance. Also the exhaust has a chrome tip which sorta directs the exhaust down towards the road which probably helps. I have been very happy with mine, after the second windshield I had to do something.
