Can I Run the Blue Ox Patriot Braking System On It's Own 6 Volt or 12 Volt Battery?

Question:

Am I able to use an auxiliary 6 volt or 12 volt battery for power rather than draining my Jeep battery all day? Any problems or concerns with fuses or anything attaching directly to an auxiliary battery?

Hello Chris,

You can run the Patriot off an auxiliary 12V battery, but it’s not something I’d recommend as a long-term solution.

The unit is designed to pull from the Jeep battery, and the draw is actually pretty low. If your battery is going dead while towing, it’s usually other systems in the vehicle pulling power, not just the Patriot itself.

With a separate battery, the biggest concern is reliability. If that battery runs down, you lose power to the braking system. You’d also need to wire it correctly with an inline fuse (around 15 to 20 amps) and make sure all connections are solid so you don’t run into voltage drop or intermittent issues mid tow.

It sounds like your main concern is avoiding a dead battery or any fuse or connection problems while you’re on the road. The more dependable fix is adding a charge line kit like the Roadmaster #RM-156-25. That will keep your Jeep battery charged from the motorhome while you’re towing, so the Patriot always has steady power and you’re not at risk of arriving with a dead battery or losing braking along the way.

Install is pretty straightforward. You’re basically running a 12V charge line from the motorhome’s 7-way to the Jeep battery with built-in protection, so it charges while you drive but won’t backfeed when parked.

Do you already carry a jump starter or portable battery with you on Jeep trips, or are you mainly trying to avoid needing one altogether?

Hi Chris I agree with Kate the charge line kit is the way to go. The installation is easy and straightforward. I have not had any issues with either my jeep or motorhome during towing.

I have used the Patriot braking system in conjunction with a battery charge line from my coach. They make a kit to wire a trickle charge line to your jeep battery and then you can install a second 12 volt direct battery connect plug for your patriot system. Has seemed to work great.

I added a Road Master battery cutoff and a charge kit. Towing a Tahoe behind a 40’ diesel pusher. No issues with the battery keeping charge. The Patriot brake itself I am not thrilled with. Three issues. 1) Regularly switches to a software update screen that I have to acknowledge while driving to get the display of the brakes back. Contacted Blue Ox and they said the firmware is for a furniture version and that my unit cannot be updated without sending it back. Not an ideal situation as it distracts me while driving 40k pounds down the highway. 2) Unit often reports needs a reset which requires me to pull off the highway to do. 3) reports brakes applied often while there is no deceleration. Makes me nervous that it could be burning up my brakes. I would not buy this unit again. Causes me a lot of stress while traveling, should be giving me piece of mind. Easy to setup but can’t say it is a reliable system. Sorry, just how I deal after driving 5,000 miles with it in use.

@JimB Thanks for sharing your experience, I can understand why that would be frustrating, especially on longer trips. I’m honestly a bit surprised to hear this. When it comes to portable braking systems, the Patriot is usually one of my go-to options. That said, I do personally prefer a one-time install system for long-term use. In your case, with air brakes, something like Air Force One would be a great fit. Just to confirm, is this the same unit you purchased last April? I want to make sure I have the right info before I reach out to Blue Ox to see what we can do to help get this resolved.

@KateF. Yes, same unit I bought in April. It has been in a Tahoe on 5 trips ranging from 100 to 1200 miles each way. In all trips it gave me trouble. Having to stop to see if it is burning up my brakes is frustrating. I have sensitivity set low. It also fails to report the force level setting on the display in most trips after a short while. It is on my side window as close as I can get it for signal

Chris, I connect my patroit to a separate 12v optima red top battery placed behind the driver seat when fllat towing my Bronco. I have the same concerns about affecting the vehicle battery voltage since ford uses electronic means to put the vehicle in neutral tow mode and have read horror stories about low voltage disengagement of the system. I do have the vehicle battery charging via the motorhome but wanted to have extra peace of mind. I charge the optima after 2 days of use and disconnect it overnight Battery drain seems minimal based on voltage testing Probably belt and suspenders logic but it works for me.

@GregW Thanks for the response, Greg. I just wanted to add a bit of reassurance here. At etrailer, we’ve installed the Roadmaster charge line kit thousands of times. We regularly have customers travel in from all over the country for flat tow setups, so we see a wide range of real-world use. With that experience, we haven’t encountered issues related to the vehicle battery when using a charge line alongside a braking system. If this were a common or inherent problem when everything is installed correctly, it’s something we would have heard about repeatedly, and we would have already worked toward a better solution. Of course, like with any setup, improper installation can lead to issues, but when installed correctly, this setup has proven to be very reliable. I just wanted to share that to help put minds at ease.

We have successfully traveled over 12,000 miles with our Patriot brake system. We have always powered it either with our Jackery 240 or Jackery 1000. Works great and no need for a charge line and no worry that I will deplete the Jeep battery. Even after driving for 7+ hours, even the small Jackery 240 goes down only about 3-4%. I could go days without recharging it at that rate (even though I always charge it full before the next tow just to be on the safe side). The only two issues we have had with the Patriot brake (again, over 12,000 miles traveled with it so far) is: One time, it would not set up correctly and we had to do a hard reset, which took just a few extra seconds of holding two buttons simultaneously. And more recently, the claw slipped off the Jeep brake pedal while underway. So from inside the RV, it appeared via the wireless display that the system was working fine, but in reality it WASN’T and the RV was doing all the braking for both vehicles, which could have been dangerous. So I have reset the feet on the bottom to give the Patriot a better angle, and will now routinely check the claw/brake pedal at each fuel stop as part of my normal walk around/inspection.

@Mark Thanks for the detailed response. It sounds like you’ve got a really solid setup overall. Getting 12,000 miles with that little power draw from the Jackery is impressive, and it’s a great way to avoid needing a charge line or worrying about draining the Jeep battery. Jeeps are great for flat towing =) That said, the claw slipping off the brake pedal is definitely something to take seriously. Good call on adjusting the feet for a better angle and adding it to your walkaround checks. That is exactly the right move. You might also consider double checking the pedal surface, since rubber pads can sometimes make it easier to slip, or adding a small non slip contact point if it happens again. Now I have to know, what was your favorite campground in that 12,000 miles?
