Will Roadmaster Spare Tire Carrier Allow Full Opening Of Rear Doors On 2026 Ram Promaster Van?

Updated 01/23/2026 | Published 01/22/2026

Question:

Just bought 2026 Thor Freedom elite 17D on Ram Promaster chassis. Will your hitch mounted spare tire carrier allow full opening of my two swing out cargo doors when the carrier with spare attached is in place?

Hello Samuel, and congrats on the new RV! Those things are slick.

The Roadmaster Hitch-Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195125 may allow the rear cargo doors to open fully, but clearance depends on your specific door swing and hitch height, so there isn’t a universal yes or no. The carrier itself sits fairly close to the vehicle, which is why measuring is important before committing.

What I recommend is measuring the distance from the top inside edge of your hitch receiver opening to the lowest point of the rear door as it swings open. If you have more than 7-1/2 inches of vertical clearance, the doors should open without contacting the plate on the spare tire mount. If the door swings down into that space, it’s likely to make contact.

It is worth noting though that your tire may prevent you from completely opening your door on one side, depending on the size of your spare tire.

What's the destination for the first trip in your new RV?

2019 Ram 3500/Winnebago Travato- my spare tire carrier does NOT allow me to open the back rear door. I thought it would but it is about an inch too high and blocks the door. Much less useful than I had hoped.

@Josh Hey Josh thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear the spare tire carrier doesn't allow the doors to open though. Still this is valuable feedback and definitely good to know.

Nope, neither doors open on my pro master. Been looking for 6 inch hitch extension which would allow the doors to open.

@Allen Hey Allen we do have hitch extensions that could go with the spare tire carrier, but I really can't recommend using one. An extension effectively decreases your hitches tongue weight capacity by half, so you'd be severely limiting the amount of weight you could carry. It just wouldn't be a safe or secure setup.

@JesseM The wheel and tire combined weight is 70 lbs. Even with an extension, should be nowhere near the limit. But I realize you have to protect yourselves legally.

@Allen You're right I do have to stay on the side of safety always. The last thing I want to do is set you up for failure or a bad time. That said, using an extension like part # Y69VR is possible as long as you keep a close eye on the weight and stay aware of your limits. Also keep in mind you need to factor in the weight of the wheel, tire, spare tire carrier (40 lbs) and extension (8 lbs). So as long as that total stays under 50% of your hitches tongue weight rating you should be good. The extension I mentioned is 7-1/4" long so it sounds like that would give you the clearance you need. Just drive carefully and take it slow going over bumps.
