Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2017 Jeep Wrangler With D-Rings and Roadmaster Tow Bar

Updated 02/10/2026 | Published 01/15/2026

Question:

We have a 2019 Coachman Leprechaun that we previously flat-towed a 2014 Honda CRV using your Roadmaster tow bar and a kit that enabled the CRV to assist with braking for the RV, and we installed the diodes for the tail lights/turn signals, etc. Now we want to use our Roadmaster tow bar to tow our 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon using the factory D-rings. Id like to know what I need to have the same set-up that we had with our Honda. So I assume I need D-ring adapters, a diode/wiring kit, a battery charging kit, and the kit that senses braking and applies the Jeep brakes.

Hi Arthur; do you know which bumper is on the 2017 Rubicon? There are a lot of variations for that year so it could be several, even for the Rubicon models. If it is factory, I'm fairly certain you can't use those D-rings for flat towing. I recommend verifying that before finding out you can't because your Jeep is rolling away.

If your bumper looks like the picture below you want to use the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 1444-3. If you find that you can use the D-rings to flat tow you will need the Adapter for Jeep D-Ring Bumper Mounts # RM-035-1 (for 1" thick shackles) or # RM-035 (3/4" thick).

Since you already have the tow bar and safety cables that leaves the wiring # RM-15267 and a supplemental brake system like the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 # RVI94FR. The Shadow 2 is a permanent installation and comes with a charge line so you won't need it separately. You may also need a high-low adapter like # e52ZV to keep your setup level.

Where are you headed once you get your Rubicon set up for towing?

Hi Arthur, how did things turn out with your Rubicon flat-tow setup using the Roadmaster gear? Did the base plate or D-ring adapters end up being the right fit for your bumper? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar Jeep.
