Can I Use The Roadmaster Dual Receiver Hitch Adapter With The Hollywood Racks RV Rider

Updated 12/19/2025 | Published 12/15/2025

Question:

I would like to use a roadmaster RM48BQ on the back of my 2015 jayco greyhawk so I can use a bike rack HLY64FR and still flat tow my 2003 VW Jetta. I have a falcon 2 tow setup. Thanks Bill

Hey, William!

The Roadmaster dual receiver hitch adapter part # RM48BQ that you're looking at is made for your exact scenario! The only think you may want to consider would be turning clearance. While the bike rack will remain stationary your vehicle will become closer to the bike rack when turning.

The Hollywood Racks RV Rider Bike Rack # HLY64FR sticks out 32 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the farthest point on the rack. With your Jetta hooked up behind your RV, measure the distance from the center of the RV’s top receiver hitch pin hole to the front-most part of your Jetta. Now subtract that measurement from 32 inches. The result tells you how much space will be left between the rack and your Jetta when you're driving straight.

Next, test the setup while turning. Go to an empty parking lot, make a tight turn, and stop at the point where your Jetta is closest to the back of your RV. Measure again from the center of the RV’s hitch pin hole to the closest part of the Jetta.

If this “turning” measurement is less than the clearance you calculated earlier, then the rack may make contact with your Jetta during sharp turns. If it’s greater, you will have enough room.

To William M & Gwendolyn Y: I have been using the Roadmaster Dual Receiver Hitch Adapter for years now and there are very few issues. I tow an F 150 extended cab 4x4 behind a Winnebago Itasca 37W with the dual hitch for my bicycle. I use a sturdy Thule 2 bicycle rack and a Blue Ox tow hitch. The main bicycle is a Merlin road bike, and the second was a mountain bike. Now I carry spare wheels for the road bike in the same rack. Clearance between the truck and the bicycles has not been an issue on even sharp turns, though the Winnebago is somewhat restrictive on turning radius and backing up is not recommended, I would have to bind things up pretty tight to cause any contact. You should check your very closely before heading out on the road though. All of that said, I am very close to the high limit on toad weight with my Harley Davidson in the bed and my canoe on the roof of the F 150. Over time and many miles I detected a bit of 'droop' within the combination of hitch, extender, and tow bar that I resolved by making my own shims to take up excess slop. I have used both a 4 and 6 inch clearance receiver and the 6 works best for me, leaving ample clearance to remove the Blue Ox without having to take the bicycle rack off. As others have said on review - This Is Not a Light Weight extender like other brands, but it is Roadmaster and they are very reliable products for any towing needs. I use their toad brake controller as well and it is fantastic too! Michael Y

@MichaelY Thanks for share your flat tow journey and all the tips. It's nice to hear about how others are using these adapters and what all they are hauling. It definitely sounds like you're putting the adapter to work.

@GwendolynY Your quite welcome. The receiver is a very well made product. I forgot to mention that I run this hitch with the solid dead end section as the straight thru to my Blue Ox for the F 150 as it puts my towing assembly at the very best possible near 0 angle recommended by Roadmaster. The 6 inches of rise it provides is just right for being able to put the bicycle rack in and out with the hitch in either the towing mode or off to the side in the stow mode. Again, it is the very best product on the market to tow any light or heavy load, and I researched Everything out there before buying the Roadmaster. Michael

@MichaelY You definitely did your homework. But I'm the same way. Especially when it comes to something that's going to be responsible for carrying/pulling important things.

Hey William, this hitch adapter works great for me. I use the bottom to tow my dirtbike trailer and the top portion to flat to my Bronco had no issues. It is strong built and will last a long time.

@RobbyM What kind of dirt bike do you have, Robby?

Hi William, the hitch adapter is super heavy and strong. I tow a Fiat 500 with a Sprinter and Blue Ox. I had to get the adapter to drop to the height of the Fiat for flat towing which has worked well. But one thing i noticed is you'll get some drooping even with U bolt braces really tight if you have heavy bikes (not evident without the bikes while towing). Also the top receiver is blocked in the back so long bike rack mounts may not fit, at least it didn't with my Yakima full swing rack. The locking pin on the bike rack was short of the receiver hole by 1/4". Considering the adapter is so thick and heavy duty, i'll drill another hole about a half inch away from the existing one to install the bike rack. It won't affect the integrity or cause a safety issue since it's just on the top receiver to lock the bike rack, not on the bottom receiver used to tow the car. The bike rack also uses a wedge lock and of course i add an additional U bolt to be extra cautious. Just mentioning this to keep in mind when evaluating additional receiver racks for tires or bikes.

@GaryP I found it better to drill a new hole in a foreign made bike rack than to drill thru the HD Roadmaster receiver hitch when possible.

@GaryP Drilling is never really the best route to go, but if you are, I'd go with what Michael Y. said and not tamper with the adapter.
