Can The Power Wire For The Curt Trailer Wiring Harness C56284 Be Run To A 12v Accessory Port?

Updated 12/29/2025 | Published 12/11/2025

Question:

Regarding the black power wire with added fuse on part C56284: Does the convertor box in this kit need to be powered at all times directly from the battery? Or would the 12V accessory outlet in the cargo area of this vehicle be a sufficient power source? I know It is only powered when key is in IGN I or IGN II which will usually be the case when using the trailer. Thanks in advance.

Hi Henry!

I know running the power wire to a 12v accessory outlet is a lot easier to do, but I can't recommend it. I have had people do that and the wiring harness almost always shorts out or just stops working prematurely. It also kind of defeats the circuit protection and could cause an issue with the vehicle's computer as most vehicles cannot handle the amperage draw associated with trailer lights.

So it's a little bit of a pain in the butt to attach the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56284 to the battery in your 2018 Honda HR-V, but it is the way it needs to be done. I included an install video were we installed this on a 2022 HR-V to help as well.

Are you going to be towing? If so, what will you be towing?

Hey Henry, how did things go running the power wire for the Curt wiring harness on your HR-V? Did connecting it directly to the battery work out as expected? Your update could make it easier for others wiring the same setup.
