Should 2022 Ford E-450 Use DC to DC Charger for Charging Lithium Batteries

Updated 12/31/2025 | Published 11/30/2025

Question:

Hi, I have a motorhome with a 2022 Ford E450 chassis with the stock 210amp alternator. The motorhome has 1, 190 watt solar panel. Im planning on upgrading my house batteries with 2 LiTime lifepo4 100ah batteries. I find conflicting reports online if I need a DC to DC charger. I would rather not if I dont need one, but I also dont want to fry my alternator on a long trip. Im also thinking about putting a toggle switch in the cab to turn off alternator power going to the house batteries while driving. Your thoughts on this? Thank you,

Hey Scott! We definitely recommend using a DC to DC charger like the Dometic PerfectPower Battery Charger # GP45QR. This ensures you get the correct charging profile, avoid any spikes from the alternator, and don't wear the alternator out.

There are ways to wire it so you can power them with the alternator, and I'm sure people do it, but I don't think it is worth the risks. The BCM on your batteries might also have issues if you go that route. Basically, I would spend the money on a charger to avoid potential issues with the batteries/alternator which will cost more in the long run.

What kind of motorhome do you have?

Hey Scott, how did things go with adding the DC to DC charger on your E450 motorhome setup? Did it give you the charging control you were hoping for on long trips? Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar upgrade.

@RobinH Hi Robin, At this point I have not installed a DC to DC charger. The LiFePO4 batteries I bought have a problem when ran in parallel. The manufacture said they are working on a new BMS to correct the problem, and should be available around March of 2026. Once I receive the new batteries and I have tested them, I'll install the DC to DC charger.
