Should Battery Be Disconnected When Relocating Break Away Switch?
Updated 08/12/2025 | Published 08/08/2025 >
Question:
My trailer came with a trailer break away system on it. I want to remove it temporarily and relocate it. I need to use the trailer after I remove it. Can I just remove the battery and not have the brakes lock up?

Hi Jeff!
A break away switch, like the Curt Trailer Breakaway Kit # C52042, basically just completes a circuit that then powers the electric brakes. If you are removing it to relocate the switch and or trailer, you will want to completely disconnect the battery from the trailer. That way there is no way it can supply power to the brakes.
Where is it now and where are you wanting to relocate it to?

Thank you for the direction. It is on the floor in the V Nose now and I will move it to the top of the V Nose.
