Will Mighty Cord 7-Way RV Style to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter Work With Electric Lockout

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/05/2025

Question:

Mighty Cord 7-Way RV Style to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter Part Number: A10-7275VP Specs: Wiring configuration: Green: passenger side brakes/turn signal Yellow: driver side brakes/turn signal Brown: tail lights Blue electric brakes White: ground I am confused. The 5th pin on a flat connector is used for Reverse Lights normally. Does this adapter not connect the flat 5th pin to the Center pin 7 on a 7-way RV blade connector, but to 2 Brake Controller/Trailer brakes? Thank you in advance for your help. With Best Regards Mike

Hi Mike; the Mighty Cord 7-Way RV Style to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter # A10-7275VP will connect the reverse light circuit to the 5th pin on the 5-way side for an electric lockout. On 5-way setups the reverse lockout wire is often blue, just like a brake output wire.

This is more a matter of poor wording since the "Blue electric brakes" designation makes it sound like it would connect to the brake output for a brake controller but that is not the case. This will definitely work with the brake actuator on what I'm assuming is your boat trailer.

Hi Mike, did the Mighty Cord adapter work with your boat trailer's brake actuator as expected? I'm asking to ensure I can assist others who might have similar setups.

@RobinH Hi Robin H., I applaud your follow-up regarding the “7-Way RV Style to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter”. My question was based on the issue that there seem to be two options for this kind of adapter: Fifth pin connects to the either: 1) Backup/Reverse light – center pin on the 7-way RV plug and purple colored wire. or 2) Brake Controller – blade #2 on the 7-way RV plug and blue wire. Predictable, using the wrong adapter will ensure a bad or very unsafe towing endeavor. I had to post my question because the product descriptions for several of the adapters were just confusing and not clear on the usage of the 5th pin. If I could ask for an improvement on your web side, it would be to have a dedicated field for these 7 to 5 way adapters which should clearly state to what the 5th pin connects. And to avoid any future usage confusion, the manufacturers should clearly label these adapter to indicate if the 5th pin connects to the brake controller or the reverse/backup light… or suggest the use of a multimeter to check it out yourself ;-) I know I will need to have both adapters because I will be towing trailers with electric brakes and other trailers with hydraulic “roll-up” brakes and reverse/backup lights. If these trailers would be mine I would change all the plugs to the 7-way RV style to avoid this dangerous issue. With Best Regards Mike
