Can I Switch From AGM Batteries To Lithium And Still Use Rich Solar Panel Kit On RV?

Published 07/08/2025

Question:

Can I use my AGM batteries now and switch to lithium later? Lithium is getting more affordable but I think I have another year of life in my agm batteries.

You sure can. Every Rich Solar RV kit that we carry includes a programmable MPPT charge controller that supports:
-AGM
-Gel
-Flooded Lead Acid
-LiFePO4 lithium

You can easily update the battery setting when you upgrade. You don't need any other parts.
I see you were looking at Rich Solar RV Solar Charging Kit w/ 6 Panels - 1,200 Watts # RS67VR. That kit is a beast and will take care of just about all of your electronics, aside from power a big AC unit all day and night (that is still a struggle for any solar setup). You can power a standard sized AC unit for a few hours though before needing to recharge the batteries or hook up to generator/shore power.

What kind of trailer do you have? Do you currently have solar panels on it?

Will I need to adjust the charge controller settings when switching from AGM to lithium batteries, and how do I do that?

@Michelle Yes, when transitioning from AGM to lithium batteries, it's important to update your charge controller settings to match the new battery type. The Rich Solar MPPT charge controller included in your kit supports various battery types, including LiFePO4 lithium batteries. To adjust the settings: Access the charge controller's settings menu. Navigate to the battery type selection option. Select "LiFePO4" or the appropriate lithium battery setting. Save the changes and exit the menu. Always refer to the user manual for detailed instructions specific to your charge controller model. If you need assistance with the process or have questions about optimizing your system for lithium batteries, feel free to ask!
