Why is My New Progressive Dynamics Converter Not Fully Charging My AGM Batteries?

Updated 08/07/2025 | Published 07/01/2025

Question:

We installed this replacing our old one when it went out. It says compatible with AGM, but the charge never gets above 14V and doesnt fully charge the AGMs - is there a setting or jumber we need to do?

Hello Mike,

Sorry to hear that you installed the Progressive Dynamics Replacement Section for AC/DC Power Distribution Panel - 45 Amp # PD4645V and your AGM batteries is not getting a full charge. Good news is, this model is made to work with AGM batteries, but there’s a little feature that might be causing what you're seeing.

Your converter has something called a Charge Wizard, which is kind of like a smart brain that switches between different charging modes depending on your battery's needs. It has three modes:

- Boost (14.4V) for fast charging

- Normal (13.6V) for regular use

- Storage (13.2V) when the batteries are full and just need a trickle

If it’s not going into Boost mode, your AGMs might never fully charge. There’s usually a small button on the converter or a little plug-in piece (called a pendant) that lets you control the charging mode. Try pressing that button once and see if a light starts flashing quickly, that means Boost mode is on. That’s what you want to see if you're trying to fully charge the batteries.

Now, if the batteries are already pretty full or there’s not much power being used in the RV, the converter might not go into Boost mode automatically. One trick is to run a few lights or appliances for a bit to drop the battery charge a little, then check if it bumps up to around 14.4V after that. You can check voltage with a simple multimeter right at the battery terminals.

You also asked if there’s a switch or jumper you need to mess with, nope, not for AGM. The converter is ready to go out of the box. But if you don’t already have the little Charge Wizard pendant # PD92201, it might be worth adding, it gives you a button to press and lets you manually switch modes if needed.

Last but not least, how old are you batteries? Having an older battery that is not working to it's full capacity could be the issue as it may not be able to reach full voltage anymore.

Please let me know if you were able to get it to fully charge, if you got a bad converter, it does have a year limited warranty.

Hey Mike, How did it go with getting your AGM batteries to fully charge using the Charge Wizard feature on your converter? I'm curious to know if the Boost mode worked for you or if you ended up needing the Charge Wizard pendant. Let me know how it turned out, as it could really help others in a similar situation!
