Why Are My Trailers Axles Under Rated For My Campers Dry Weight?

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 06/28/2025

Question:

I have a 2024 Dutchman Astoria 3171 RLP. My sticker says that my axles are rated for 5100 lbs each there are 2. So that is a total of 10, 200 Lbs. My coach is 10, 400 lbs EMPTY. Am I already exceeding my axle weight limit, or is the hitch weight taken into account 2200 Lbs./subtracted from the empty coach weight? Thank you,

Hello Melissa, thanks for reaching out. This is pretty typical for campers. The reason for this is about 15% of the total weight is tongue weight on the hitch (or the jack), so the axles are not bearing the full weight of the camper at any point.

Hi Melissa, did the explanation about the tongue weight help clarify your concerns about the axle weight limit on your camper? I'm asking because understanding this could be helpful for others with similar questions.
