Updated 06/24/2025 | Published 06/17/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 Ford Expedition and want to put a Red Arc Liberty tow controller on it with a Ford wiring harnes adapter. E trailer says this wont fit my vehicle, but i dont physiclay know why. I have pictures of the pig tail from behind the dash. Can you tell me why it says that on your end?

Hey Terral! The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR can be used with your 2022 Ford Expedition. It is also the brake controller I recommend the most, great choice! Sometimes our guide lists things this way if a custom wiring harness isn't available from that manufacturer. However, a brake controller will fit any vehicle with a 7-way installed so it is incorrect. Since you have that port under the dash you will need the following to complete the installation:

-Redarc Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers # 331-TPH-007

The Tekonsha wiring harness will fit the port under your dash and the adapter will let you plug that harness into the Liberty.

What kind of trailer do you plan on towing?

Thanks Robin! I ordered the RED24FR ( order #122785154 )Tuesday and also included the 331-TPH-007 wire harness because it looks like it would fit my ford harness behind my dash knockout plug (where the factory brake controller would be). will this not fit correctly? I think the one you sent me goes from a Redarc to a Tekonsha brake controller? I don't understand where that would plug into. My camper is a Winnebago Micro Mini 2306BHS. ITs a double axel torsion axel dual axel braked camp trailer. dry weight is 4350 lbs and GVRW out at 7000lb. I believe my Expedition is rated to tow 6500 something without the max tow package. have you heard of these needing transmission coolers without having the max tow package? I couldn't find any info saying the Max tow package came with more cooling. just better axel ratio and maybe different springs or something.

@Terral you're right. I'm not sure why but Redarc only lists it up through 2017 but it is the same as the Tekonsha plug so it will fit. What I gave you would do the same thing but with an extra adapter, I'll see if we can't update that. The info on that tow package is a pain to sort out. We have an Expedition as well and I remember the dealers had absolutely no idea what was what between different models. It is 2 years older but Ford lists it with a radiator upgrade and an upgraded rear axle. The 2022 doesn't show the radiator upgrade under the tow package but has the upgraded rear axle which I'm sure is the 3.73 axle ratio that increases the capacity from 6k to 9,200/9,300 lbs. I would keep that weight down so you don't exceed the 6,000 lb capacity of the vehicle. Also, I highly recommend using a weight distribution hitch like # EQ37100ET, you're going to need it. Even with the towing package a WDH is required to tow over 6,000 lbs. You can find all of this information here https://www.ford.com/cmslibs/content/dam/brand_ford/en_us/brand/cpo/pdf/2022_Ford_Expedition_Towing_Info_Nov16.pdf

@RobinH Thank you! Yes i actually have that exact equalizer hitch I'm using on my Colorado Diesel with the trailer. I'm excited to try out the Expedition when the brake controllers comes in. Thank you for the tow package info. I'm sure the 3.73 gearing would make a big difference in keeping temps down in the motor and especially transmission. Either way ill keep the load under 6k on the trailer and I'm sure it will do ok. Did your Expedition have the 10 speed? or the trans before that? 6 speed i think? I'm curious if i need to install a trans cooler. So far we love the Expedition cabin room and power of the Eco boost. We will see if it takes place of my 2.8 Duramax with 4.56 gears for towing the camper to Idaho! :) on an other random question. are you a direct parts replacement dealer for Winnebago? I'm looking for a few cabinet doors.

@Terral it is the 10 speed. The space is definitely nice to have in the Expedition, especially on a long trip. I would keep an eye on the temp while towing and see what you think. You probably don't need one and you can always add a trans cooler later. We are not a dealer for Winnebago so cabinets aren't something we have. I would check with your local dealer or repair shop to see if they can order them.
