What Is The Best Weight Distribution System For My V-nose Trailer?

Updated 06/19/2025 | Published 06/14/2025

Question:

Hi, good afternoon. I’m writing and inquiring about sway control for the trailer I pull. I tow a 6x12 enclosed v-nose trailer single axle and it does have some sway in it that causes me to slow down. Either at Highway speeds or when a truck passes. My current weights based on calculations my all up weight truck and trailer included is 7,460lbs. My tounge weight I belive is around 300lbs. What weight distribution hitch with sway control do you recommend? I did get my weights from a CAT scale. I don’t want to go to light and I don’t want to go to heavy where my ride is rigid or the set up is useless.

Hey Kevin,

On a trailer with a v-nose like yours you cannot use the standard weight distribution systems with the chain hangers that go over the top of the trailer frame. You would need to use a system with the Reese Chain Hanger Kit # RP58305, this kit will re locate the chain hangers to a spot on the frame you are able to mount.

You would then go with a weight distribution system like # BXW0550 for your trailer to eliminate that sway. The Blue Ox system I linked is going to be perfect for your tongue weight range and not to overkill for it. It is going to make for a much better ride overall.

At the CAT scale did you weigh just the trailer or truck and trailer together? You get a better idea of your tongue weight just off of the trailer weight.

@KevinH What is the year make and model of your truck. I will get a better idea of what your trailer weighs and see if the Blue Ox is still the best option for you.
